HURON – The Brookings Bombers Black swept Huron in a doubleheader Wednesday night to improve to 8-2 on the season. Their offense continued to stay hot as they scored double-digits in each game.
• Brookings 11, Huron 8 (6 inn.)
The Bombers scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to give them the lead and the win in the first game.
Brookings scored right away with two runs in the top of the first inning. Jack Merritt was hit by a pitch and Austin Clark singled to start the inning. Breck Hirrschoff then hit Merritt home with a single and Clark scored on a Owen Schneider ground out. The Bombers held Huron scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
Brookings went down one-two-three in the top of the second, but held Huron scoreless in the bottom of the inning. The Bombers had a guy on second with two outs in the top of third and Schneider hit an RBI single to make it 3-0. Huron came back and scored six of their own in the bottom of the third to make it 6-3 heading into the fourth inning.
The Bombers were able to put up three runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. They had the bases loaded with two outs and Clark hit a two-run double to make it 6-5. Tate Helmboldt then scored on wild pitch to make 6-6. Huron scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-6.
Brookings scored one run in the top of the fifth to make it 8-7 and sent Huron down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning. Merritt walked and Clark singled to lead off the sixth. Merritt scored on a Hirrschoff sacrifice fly to tie the game and Clark scored on a Schneider single to make it 9-8. Schneider scored on an overthrow by the catcher and Griffen Bartles scored when Jacob Kahle was hit by a pitch to make it 11-8 heading into the final frame.
Huron had a lead-off walk, but then went down one-two-three to end the game. Schneider went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s. Clark went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and Hirrschoff went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Schneider picked up the win for the Bombers after pitching the final three innings. He gave up two unearned runs on one hit. He struck out three batters and walked three.

The Bombers made quick work of Huron in the second game as they won via the 10-run rule in four innings, 13-1.
The Bombers scored one run in the top of the first on a Clark RBI single and they held Huron scoreless in the bottom of the inning. Brookings blew the game open with nine runs in the top of the second. The inning was highlighted by nine walks. Bartels also hit an RBI single. Huron got one run back in the bottom of the second inning.
The Bombers added two runs in the top of the third. Hirrschoff and Schneider each scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-1. Huron went down one-two-three in the bottom of the third and were able to hold the Bombers to one run in the top of the fourth. They were unable to score any runs in the bottom of the inning and the game ended with the score 13-1.
Schneider went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Bartels and Clark each went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Sam Johnson went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Johnson pitched all four innings for the Bombers and gave up one run on one hit. He struck out six batters and walked one.
The Bombers will play a doubleheader in Yankton on Friday afternoon.
