Brookings falls to Roncalli, Mitchell

BROOKINGS – The Bobcats dropped a pair of tennis matches on Tuesday at Hillcrest Tennis Courts, falling 8-1 to Aberdeen Roncalli before being shut out by Mitchell, 9-0.

Brookings, 1-4 on the season, travels to Harrisburg on Thursday for another double dual against the Tigers and Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Despite the team scores, both dual matches featured some competitive matches as Jonah Dobbs scored the only point for Brookings against the Cavaliers with a 6-2, 5-7 (10-6) win over Isaiah Vilhauer at No. 1 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Micah Ardry gave Austin Kokales a run as he lost 7-5 in the first set before succumbing, 6-2 in the second for the straight-set loss and Dawson Peters dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Spencer Titus at No. 6 singles.

In doubles, Dobbs and Dalton Rittershaus fell 6-4 in the first set before dropping a 6-1 decision in the second set.

It was even more competitive for the home team against the Kernels despite not winning a match.

Both top singles matches went the distance as Dobbs won the first set, 7-5, against Jacob Dahme, but then lost 6-3 in Set 2 and 10-2 in the tiebreak.

At No. 2, Rittershaus lost 6-3 in Set 1 against Carter Cavanaugh before rallying for a 7-5 win in the second set, but the Kernel junior pulled out a 10-8 decision in the tiebreaker.

At No. 4 singles, Zach Weber played a solid first set against Adam Loes before losing 6-4; and then lost 6-0 in Set 2.

Alex Miley dropped his first set, 6-2, to Baley Miller at No. 5, and then came up just short in a 6-4 loss in the second.

In doubles action, Miley and Peters lost 6-3 and 6-4 in a competitive matchup with Baley Miller and Alex Bergeson at No. 3.
