Brookings freshman/sophomore baseball team closes with third-place finish

SIOUX FALLS – The Brookings freshman/sophomore baseball team placed third in the season-ending Ken Tomek Jr. Invite.

The Bobcats opened with a 14-2 defeat of Sioux Falls Lincoln on Friday, May 10. They beat Brandon Valley 13-3 in five innings on Saturday, May 11, before falling 12-2 in five innings to Sioux Falls O’Gorman later in the day.

Brookings dropped Sioux Falls Washington 3-0 in the third-place game Tuesday.

The Bobcats finished the season with a 12-3 record.

Friday, May 10

 Brookings 14, Sioux Falls Lincoln 2

The Bobcats scored three runs in back-to-back innings to open up a 7-0 lead after 2 1/2. They added a five-spot in the seventh to seal the deal.

Trey Svennes (double, three runs) and Braden Clifford both had two hits and an RBI. Ashton Witte added a pair of singles. Jake Ammann doubled and drove in two runs.

Ammann pitched six innings to earn the win, giving up two runs on six hits and six walks with seven strikeouts.

Saturday, May 11

The Bobcats put up four runs in the first and third innings before adding five in the fourth to end the game early.

Talon Richter was 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Jett Leddy was 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Payton Theodosopoulos (double) and Trey Svennes both contributed two hits and an RBI. Lincoln Hardin added a pair of singles.

Josh Devine threw all five innings, allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Braden Clifford singled and drove in a run. Payton Theodosopoulos had a hit and scored. Talon Richter and Jett Leddy also collected hits, and Josh Devine scored the other run.

The Knights broke open a 4-2 game with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to end it.

Mason Bebensee tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out two batters and walking one.

Talon Richter and Jake Ammann both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Trey Svennes (double), Josh Devine and Sam Hardin added a hit apiece.

The Bobcats put together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth as Ashton Witte was hit by a pitch and Ammann singled. Richter and Devine followed with consecutive RBI singles to make it 2-0.

Payton Theodosopoulos drew a walk to lead off the seventh. He stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
