BROOKINGS – A Brookings County jury convicted 37-year-old Daniel Mann of Brookings of one count of first-degree rape on Friday.

Mann was initially facing four counts of first-degree rape. He was indicted by a Brookings County grand jury and arrested in September 2016, State’s Attorney Abigail Howard said.

The jury deliberated for six hours and reached the guilty verdict on one of the rape charges at about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Court documents say the victim was 12 years old at the time of the offense, which occurred between May 2014 and January 2015.

Sentencing has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 17. First-degree rape is a Class C felony and is punishable by up to life in prison and a $50,000 fine.

After reading the verdict Friday, the judge ordered a pre-sentence investigation and a psycho-sexual evaluation. He also ordered Mann remanded to the custody of the Brooking County Detention Center and held without bond until sentencing.

Howard said she was pleased with the verdict and that justice was served in the case.

“I’m grateful we were able to bring some justice to the victim as well,” she said.
