Brookings Municipal Utilities, Swiftel Communications receive scam reports

Posted

BROOKINGS – Brookings Municipal Utilities and Swiftel Communications are cautioning the community of individuals misrepresenting themselves as either BMU or Swiftel Communications employees.

The recent reports involve individuals who are asking to see residents’ monthly bills or are wanting to discuss recent utility usage amounts.

The individuals are in fact not BMU or Swiftel Communications employees.

BMU and Swiftel Communications employees do not go door-to-door to discuss monthly bills or utility usage. Scams by phone can also occur. If you question the validity of the caller, hang up and call the business back at the listed telephone number. There are some circumstances where BMU and Swiftel Communications employees would go door to door. Those instances include discussing upcoming construction projects that may affect a homeowner’s property, or to address a matter that would require for an immediate service interruption to fix an outage issue.

Occasionally, staff will go around neighborhoods to leave information on the front doors of homes informing residents of upcoming projects, or to leave call-back information so that property owners can contact BMU or Swiftel Communications. BMU and Swiftel Communications’ staff will typically be in uniform and be driving marked vehicles.

If you have any questions about BMU or Swiftel Communications’ communications policies, call 697-8441. Residents who encounter suspicious activities are encouraged to call the Brookings Police Department at 692-2113.
