Brookings Rangers hockey roundup: JV teams earn wins over Aberdeen, Sioux Falls

The Rangers had another busy week on the ice with JV, Pee Wee and Squirt teams in action from here in Brookings to all the way in Grand Forks.

BOYS JV

 Brookings 7, Aberdeen 1

The Rangers picked up a win over the Cougars at the Odde Ice Center in Aberdeen on Saturday thanks to a hat trick by Talon Hyde and two goals by Jacob Law.

Law put the Rangers on the board with an unassisted goal at 7:41 of the first period and Hyde scored from Jackson Heller and Law at 9:53 of the first period to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Brookings piled on with three goals in the second period as Hyde scored unassisted at 10:01, Ayden Petty scored from Heller and Hyde at 12:08 and Heller scored from Braden Dobesh and Law at 16:23.

Law scored his second goal of the game at 2:52 of the third period from Heller and Hyde and Hyde completed the hat trick at 15:48 with an assist from Cody Jacobson.

Ryder Anderson made 10 saves in goal for the Rangers who remained in third place of the SDAHA standings behind Mitchell and Sioux Falls.

The Rangers will play two games next weekend when they travel to Yankton on Friday night and host Brandon Valley at the Larson Ice Center on Saturday.

GIRLS JV

 Brookings 3, Sioux Falls Flyers 0

The Rangers battled the Flyers at the SCHEELS Ice Plex in Sioux Falls on Jan. 14, using three second-period goals to come away with the victory.

Graciana Peterson put the Rangers on the board with an unassisted goal 50 seconds into the second period before Ava Kahle scored an unassisted goal at 2:00 of the second period to put Brookings up 2-0. Brynnlea Peterson scored the final goal from Alyssa Stewart at 12:00 of the second period, which was all the support that Aletha Baker and Rorii Quam needed in net to pick up the shutout victory.

PEE WEE A

The Rangers played a pair of games last weekend with Brookings defeating Huron at home but falling on the road to Sioux Falls Pee Wee Blue.

• Brookings 7, Huron 2

The Rangers routed the All Stars at the Larson Ice Center in Brookings on Saturday afternoon thanks to two goals each from Tegan Jensen and Carter Nielsen.

Brookings took an early 2-0 lead when Jensen scored at 2:43 of the first period from Colin Jacobson and Nielsen scored from Cannon Friedrich at 15:56 of the first period. The Rangers continued to pile on in the second period when Jason scored with an assist from Nielsen at 9:55 and Maxx Anderson scored a power-play goal with assists from Friedrich and Ethan Foerster at 11:24.

Brookings scored three more goals in the third period to finish off the All Stars beginning with Jensen’s second goal of the game from Jack Lovseth at 6:43. Colt Vanmaanen and Nielsen scored unassisted goals to finish off Huron as Jon Drew stopped seven of nine shots to earn the victory.

• Sioux Falls Pee Wee Blue 6, Brookings 4

The battle between the Flyers and the Rangers got off to a fast start on Sunday morning at the SCHEELS Ice Plex in Sioux Falls as the two teams combined for four goals in the first period.

Lovseth was a catalyst for the Rangers as he assisted on Jensen’s goal at 14:46 of the first period and scored 14 seconds later to send Brookings into the first intermission tied at 2-2. The Rangers took the lead at 12:40 of the second period when Un-Hyeng Keay scored an unassisted goal to put Brookings up 3-2, but the Flyers answered with four goals in the third period to come away with the victory.

Foerster scored an unassisted goal at 4:09 of the third period while Drew stopped 12 of 18 shots in the loss.

PEE WEE C

 Brookings 5, Sioux Falls White 1

Liam Heiberger and Beau Luvaas each scored twice as the Rangers defeated the Flyers at the Larson Ice Center on Saturday afternoon.

Heiberger helped the Rangers strike first with an unassisted goal at 4:16 of the first period and gave Brookings a 2-1 lead with a goal from Ty Harris at 2:12 of the third period. Harris scored 23 seconds later with an assist from Heiberger and Luvaas scored back-to-back goals from Quam at 3:06 in the third period and unassisted at 10:55 of the third period to seal the victory.

Bob Carroll made 10 saves and Ethan Haufschild made five to help the Rangers come away with the win. The Rangers will be in action again on Sunday when they host the Huron All Stars.

SQUIRT A

 Brookings 10, Huron 0

The Rangers scored four goals each in the second and third periods to defeat the All Stars on Saturday morning.

Spencer Lovseth had two goals and an assist in the victory while Max Harris had a six-point game with three goals and three assists. Brodie Bahe and William Diercks each scored two goals while Gavin Zweibahmer scored once to fuel the rout. Theo Treml also had an assist in the win.

• Aberdeen 9, Brookings 1

The Cougars scored five times in the third period as they defeated the Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

Francisco scored the lone goal for the Rangers with assists from Kinley Foerster and Zweibahmer at 10:56 while Nash Billings stopped 19 of 28 shots.

SQUIRT RED

The Rangers took part in the Grand Forks Classic Squirt Tournament last weekend, going 2-2 in four games. Brookings lost to Grand Forks White in their first game of the tournament on Friday afternoon before defeating Minot 4-3 and Fargo Navy 7-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers wrapped up the tournament by falling to Sioux Falls 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.

SQUIRT WHITE

Brookings goalie Porter Vanderbush had a solid performance in net last week, stopping 19 of 23 shots in a Jan. 14 win over Oahe. 8 of 14 shots in a Jan. 15 loss to Watertown, and 20 of 25 saves in a loss to Huron B on Jan. 15.
