BROOKINGS – The Brookings Swim Club capped off its indoor season with a pair of meets – the 2017 South Dakota Short Course Swim Championships in Aberdeen and the 2017 Spring Sectional Meet in Iowa City, Iowa.

The BSC swim team, comprised of Sheila Cochrane, Josh Henderson, Cain Lounsbery, Kyle Sorbe and Mark Vanderzee, competed against 820-plus swimmers, along with 120-plus clubs at the 2017 Speedo Spring Sectional on March 9-12 at the University of Iowa.

Individually, Lounsbery finished 20th in the 200 back; 21st in the 400 IM; and 39th in the 100 back.

Vanderzee was 23rd in the 200 fly and 1,650 free, along with a 28th-place finish in the 500 freestyle and 30th in the 1,000 free.

Lounsbery placed 20th in the 200 back; 21st in the 400 IM; and 39th in the 100 back.

Sorbe was 28th in the 200 back while the 400 medley squad – Vanderzee, Henderson, Lounsbery and Sorbe – finished 34th, and the 400 freestyle relay of Vanderzee, Sorbe, Lounsbery and Henderson placed 36th.

At the South Dakota State Short Course Championships in Aberdeen, March 3-5, 34 swimmers competed, with Brookings placing fifth overall.

Sioux Falls was first with 5,084 points, followed by Watertown (4,181), Aberdeen (4,054), Pierre (3,160.5) and Brookings with 1,884.5.

Brookings finished third in the team percentage – total points of top eight placing divided by number of swims.

Individually, BSC had eight first-place finishes.

Jazmyn Lunn, in the girls’ 9-10 division won the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle; along with the 100 backstroke; 100 butterfly; and 100 and 200 IMs.

Grace Davis touched first in the girls’ 11-12 100 breastroke, while Lounsbery won the 200 back and Vanderzee won the 200 and 500 free, along with the 200 fly.

The individual top-20 highpoint awards by age groups included: Leif Johnson, 20th in 8 and under boys; Lunn in first in 9-10 girls along with Molly Schultz in seventh and Ernest Ting in sixth on the boys’ side.

Tristina Ting placed fifth in the girls’ 11-12 category as Grace Davis was 11th, as was Tomas Gonzalez on the boys’ side.

In the boys’ 13-14 division, Matt Sorbe was eighth, followed by Billy Fuller (11); Ryan Nielson (14); and Jack Schultz (19).

The 15-16 girls were led by Caitlyn Nielson (7); along with Grace Heier (13) and Jessica Gile (18).

The 15-16 boys had Kyle Sorbe (11) and Josh Henderson (20) on tap.

Mark Vanderzee led the 17-19 boys with his second-place finish while Cain Lounsbery was ninth and Sheila Cochrane 13 in the women’s category.
