Brookings Wildlife Federation to hear of adventures in Alaska

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Wildlife Federation will host Terry Wieczorek at its monthly infolunch at noon at the Outdoor Adventure Center, 2810 22nd Ave., on Friday.

Wieczorek will talk about his hunting and fishing trip to the end of the Alaskan Peninsula and show photos of the landscape and fish and wildlife.

The infolunch is open to the public. A light lunch will be available for a free-will offering.

In September, Wieczorek and friends traveled to Cold Bay, Alaska, at the end of the Alaskan Peninsula, to hunt geese, ducks, and ptarmigan, and fish for salmon in and around the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.

The refuge’s Izembek Lagoon is the fall staging area for virtually the entire Pacific black brant goose population.

Waterfowl, ptarmigan, brown bear, harbor seals, sea otters, walruses, and dozens of other species of birds and animals populate the area.

The Izembek National Wildlife Refuge lies between the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. In the heart of the refuge is Izembek Lagoon, a coastal ecosystem that is home to one of the world’s largest eelgrass beds. Massive numbers of waterfowlv visit the lagoon to feed on eelgrass and rest during migration.

Topography goes from the sea-level coastal marshes to mountains over 9,000 feet elevation, with soaring volcanic peaks and jagged spires of the Aghileen Pinnacles.

Wieczorek last spoke at the BWF’s infolunch in February 2019 when he talked about climbing Devil’s Tower.

He is a long-time BWF member and is presently on the board of directors.

The BWF is in its 43rd year of supplying conservation information and activities to the Brookings community. It is affiliated with the South Dakota Wildlife Federation and the National Wildlife Federation.
