Bryant Courter breaks school record

BROOKINGS – South Dakota won the women’s team title and Minnesota triumphed on the men’s side of the Jim Emmerich/Alumni Invite on Saturday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

The Coyote women totaled 130 points. North Dakota State (97) was second and host South Dakota State (46.5) third.

For the men, the Gophers totaled 101.33 points to edge the Coyotes (96). The Bison (61.67) were third and the Jackrabbit (48) fourth.

SDSU competes in the Messersmith Inviational, hosted by Northern Iowa on Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Men

SDSU’s Bryant Courter broke a 25-year-old school record in the triple jump the first weekend of December and added 1 1/4 inches to the mark Saturday, winning the event at 50 feet, 2 inches.

A sophomore from Rich Hill, Mo., Courter also holds the SJAC and meet record in the event.

Courter placed third in the long jump with a leap of 23-8 3/4 earlier in the day.

Three Jackrabbits posted third-place finishes – Trent Francom cleared 15-11 in the pole vault; Colton Bender had a 64-2 1/4 heave in the weight throw; and Trevor Capra, competing unattached, posted a time of 8:27.5 in the 3,000-meter run.

Taking fourth were Chase Cayo in the 3,000 (8:32.07) and Nick Wessels in the 60-meter hurdles (8.3).

Sebastian Sowada ended up fifth in the mile (4:19.68) and Gabe Peters matched that finish in the 3,000 (8:34.13).

Sam Zenner was sixth in the 60-meter dash in 6.93 seconds.

Women

Junior Krista Steele won the women’s 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 11 seconds – the second fastest in school history. 

Rachel King placed first in the 3,000 in 9:34.21 and was fifth in the mile with a 4:52.39.

Estelline native Savannah Dolezal took third in the 400 in 56.25.

Jaymie O’Connor was third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.81 and Bailey Cowling cleared 5-3 in the high jump to tie for fourth.

Alumni 1,600

Brendan Sage took first with a 4:28.83 clocking, as Kipp Kinsley was second in 4:38.81.

Up Next

The Jackrabbits will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday to compete in the Mark Messersmith Invitational.

The first weekend in February sees SDSU competing in both the Dakota Realty/Alumni Invitational in Vermillion and the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.

The Jackrabbits then return home for back-to-back meets at the SJAC – the SDSU Indoor Classic, Feb. 9-10, and the SDSU Last Chance on Feb. 16.
