BROOKINGS – Current and former local leaders – including government officials, business owners and representatives, construction industry professionals and more – came together Wednesday morning to celebrate the start of construction on the Interstate 29 interchange at 20th Street South. The ceremonial groundbreaking was to be held at the construction site just east of I-29, but wet and stormy weather moved the event indoors to Daktronics. Among those who were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition, posing with golden shovels, are, from left, former City Engineer Jackie Lanning, Mayor Ope Niemeyer, Brookings County Commission Chair Angie Boersma, Miranda Bowes Peterson and Jason Bowes of Bowes Construction, Brad Wermers of Banner Associates, former Banner Associates President Daryl Englund, County Commissioner Larry Jensen standing in for Commissioner Lee Ann Pierce, former Brookings Mayor Keith Corbett, former Brookings Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Al Heuton, Van Fishback of Fishback Financial Corporation, and Daktronics co-founder Al Kurtenbach.
