Bullets drop both games in doubleheader on the road in Yankton

YANKTON – The Bullets fell to 15-17 on the season as they lost both games of a doubleheader on the road in Yankton Wednesday night.

Game 1

 Yankton 11, Brookings 5

The Bullets gave up six runs in the final two innings and dropped Game 1 against the Yankton Blacksox.

Brookings was held scoreless in the top of the first inning and Yankton scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the inning. Austin Pederson led off the inning with a walk, but was caught trying to steal third for the first out of the inning. Dylan Prouty hit a two-out single and was hit home on a double from Colton Kampshoff to make it 1-0 after the first inning.

The Bullets went down one-two-three in the second inning and the Blacksox added two more runs in their half of the inning. Brayden Boese got on base with a single to lead off the inning and Marcus Adam reached on an error with no outs. With two outs, Pederson hit Boese and Adam home on a single to make it 3-0 after two innings.

Brookings got on the board in the top of the third inning and cut into the lead. Jett Leddy hit a lead-off double and Peyton Theodosopoulos walked with no outs. Josh Devine then hit a single that scored Leddy and Theodosopoulos scored on a Lincoln Hardin ground out to make it 3-2.

Yankton brought the lead back up to three in the bottom of the inning. Prouty hit a single and Kampshoff walked with no outs. Landon Loecker then hit a single to score Prouty and Boese reached on an error allowing Kampshoff to score to make it 5-2 after three innings.

The Bullets tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning. Brayden Clifford led off the inning with a walk and Isaac Norgaard hit a single. With two outs, Theodosopoulos hit a two RBI single and Devine hit a single to send Theodosopoulos home.

Brookings held Yankton scoreless in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to take the lead in the top of the fifth. The Blacksox would make them pay as they scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Boese scored on a passed ball and Pederson hit a two RBI double to make it 8-5 after five innings. 

In the top of the sixth, with nobody out, the Bullets had runners on first and second. Devine grounded into a double play and Lincoln Hardin flew out to end their half of the inning. 

In the bottom of the inning, the Blacksox added three insurance runs to make it 11-5. They scored the runs on a bunt, an error and a walk.

Brookings was down to their last at-bats in the seventh inning. With one out, Sam Hardin drew a walk and Clifford doubled to give the Bullets runners on second and third. Norgaard the struck out and Keiji Numata grounded out to end the game.

Lincoln Hardin started the game for the Bullets and pitched 4 2/3 innings. He gave up eight runs, four earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Theodosopoulos pitched one inning and gave up three runs on two hits with one strikeout and four walks.

At the plate, Theodosopoulos went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Devine went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Norgaard went 2-for-4 and Clifford went 1-for-3. Lincoln Hardin had an RBI without a hit.

Game 2

 Yankton 5, Brookings 4 (5 inn.)

The Bullets ran out of time in Game 2 as they lost a back and forth affair in five innings due to time limit rules.

Yankton took the early lead again in Game 2 as they scored in the first inning. Pederson led off the inning with a single and with one out, Prouty grounded out to the shortsop and Pederson scored to make it 1-0. The Blacksox’s then loaded the bases up with a walk and two batters getting hit by a pitch, but J Larson grounded out to end the inning.  

The Bullets took their first lead of the doubleheader in the top of the second inning. Sam Hardin had a lead-off walk and Norgaard walked with one out. With two outs Leddy walked to load the bases up and Theodosopoulos hit a bases-clearing triple. Theodosopoulos later scored on a steal of home to make it 4-1.

Yankton answered in the bottom of the inning with six runs of their own to regain the lead. The bases were loaded with one out when four walks in-a-row sent four runs home. Larson was then hit by a pitch and Caeden Ekroth walked to send in two more runs to make it 7-4 after two innings.

Each team was held scoreless in the third and the Bullets three runs in the fourth. Ethan Molengraaf had a lead-off walk and Numata singled. With one out, Devine singled to send Molengraaf home and Numata scored stealing home. With two outs, Joey McMacken hit an RBI single to tie the game 7-7.

Brookings held the Blacksox scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning, but were unable to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth with one out, Colton Potts walked and Prouty singled. Kampshoff then struck out for the second out of the inning. Loecker then hit a ground ball to Molengraaf who could not handle it and Potts scored for a walk-off win for the Blacksox. The game ended due to time limit.

McMacken pitched 1 1/3 innings for the Bullets. He gave up seven runs, one earned, on one hit with one strikeout and six walks. Numata pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up one run that was not earned on one hit with four strikeouts and three walks.

Theodosopoulos went 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Devine went 1-for-2 with an RBI and McMacken went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Bullets will play doubleheader in Sioux Falls against Sioux Falls East tonight with the first game starting at 5 p.m.
