Bullets go 1-3 at Sioux Falls Tournament

SIOUX FALLS – The Brookings Bullets posted a 1-2 mark over the weekend in the Sioux Falls Tournament – beating up on Pierre in a 19-9 win on Saturday before falling 6-4 to Brandon Valley and then dropping a 2-1 decision to Renner on Sunday.

The Bullets, 7-14 on the season, get another shot at Renner on Tuesday when they play a doubleheader in Renner that begins at 5 p.m.

Sunday’s Game

• Renner 2, Brookings 1

Tanner Huber and Kane Kurtenbach combined to throw a five-hitter with both of Renner’s runs being unearned as the Bullets committed three errors in the game.

After Renner drew first blood with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Bullets answered in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 1-1.

Jacob Vlaminck opened the frame with a base hit; stole second and scored on Gabe Wounded Head’s double.

Renner took advantage of a walk and an error to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth before a single to left plated what turned out to be the winning run.

Huber allowed an unearned run as he gave up four hits and two walks with one strikeout in five innings of work.

Kurtenbach threw the sixth and surrendered one unearned run on one hit and three walks as he suffered the loss in relief.

Saturday’s Games

• Brandon Valley 6, Brookings 4

Brandon Valley used a four-run fourth inning to build its lead to 5-2 and then added an insurance run in the sixth en route the 6-4 win over the Bullets late Saturday.

Brookings plated two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead but couldn’t hold on.

Huber singled to lead off the fourth and moved to second when Kohji Numata drew a walk. Jeffrey Fuks’ sac bunt moved both runners up a base before Matt Girard plated Huber with a base hit. Cayden Jacobsma and Wounded Head drew two-out walks to force in Numata to make it 2-1.

After Brandon Valley went up 5-2, the Bullets notched single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to get within a run.

In the fifth, Kolby Weinberg hit an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. He moved to third on Huber’s one-out ground out and then scored on Numata’s single.

Cole McElhany took one for the team to lead off the sixth. He moved to second on a passed ball; went to third on Jacobsma’s ground out; and scored on Wounded Head’s one-out ground out to make it 5-4.

Caden Wright was saddled with the loss as he gave up five earned runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 3 2/3 frames. Weinberg gave up an unearned run in 2 1/3 innings of relief as he walked one and struck out one.

• Brookings 19, Pierre 9

After Pierre opened with a three-run first, the Bullets responded with four in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead through two.

Brookings added three in the third to better Pierre’s lone third-inning tally; and then exploded for 12 in the fourth after Pierre went up 9-7 with a five-run fourth.

McElhany tossed 3 2/3 innings and gave up all nine runs – with only one being earned as the Bullet defense committed five errors. He allowed eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Huber went 1 1/3 and struck out two of the four batters he faced.

Weinberg (4), Matthew Girard (3), Huber (3), Jacobsma (2), Wright (2) and Carter Merritt (2) had multiple RBIs as Merritt singled twice.
