Burdick sets 1,000-meter school record at SDSU DII Invitational

BROOKINGS – Kyle Burdick and Jordan Hanna added their names to South Dakota State’s record books at the SDSU DII Invitational on Friday night.

Burdick won his first career 1,000-meter attempt in 2 minutes, 25.08 seconds to beat Nick Burrow’s mark of 2:26.74, set in 2001.

Burdick’s mark also bested the SDSU DII meet record of 2:28.20, set in 2018, and the 2015 Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex facility record of 2:27.20.

Hanna, who finished second to Burdick in 2:28.31, wrote his name into the SDSU record book at No. 6 of all time. The school’s 1,000-meter top-10 list hadn’t been touched since 2011 and the top-three all-time had not been touched since 2005 prior to Friday evening.

Ellie Friesen wrote her own mark on the school’s top-10 list in the women’s 1,000-meter run – winning on Friday in 2:57.51 to become the fourth fastest all-time at SDSU. In her short indoor career so far, she has competed in three events and won two of them.

The first school record of the night was set in the women’s 600-meter dash when Oksana Covey reset her own record from 2017 (1:32.53) as she crossed in 1:32.38 for first place, winning her second career 600 race out of three attempts. Covey also reset the SDSU DII meet best that was previously set by teammate Krista Steele in 2017 (1:34.27).

The women’s shot put contributed to three of the SDSU personal-best marks reset.

Micayla TerWee placed second with a put of 45 feet, 3 1/2 inches for her sixth career indoor shot put top-three finish while Caitlin Thilges (9th, 42-1.5), Alex Schmidt (11th, 41-9.75) and Meghan Hettinga (13th, 41-3) posted PRs.

Noah Huber won with a put of 52-10 3/4 for his second consecutive career win in the indoor shot as Abby Sudbeck placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 58 feet, 1/4 inch.  She now sits atop the Jackrabbit season performance list with the 2 feet, 4 3/4 inch increase.

Rachel Propst added a personal-best mark in the 800-meter run with a second-place finish of 2:21.87, trimming 4.56 seconds off her previous-best set at the SDSU Holiday Invite in December. She won her section and finished runner-up overall.
