FARGO, N.D. – South Dakota State sophomore Kyle Burdick won the men’s 10,000-meter run on the opening day of the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Schlanser Track.

"I thought it was a good day for us," head coach Rod DeHaven told SDSU Sports Information. "All of our athletes competed well and we had great leadership. Championship meets are always tough, in that you get some events to go your way, others you don't. We've just got to keep going either way, score some points, get some leadership and perform at the level we know we can.

“Overall though, it was a great day with great weather, and we're excited for (Friday)."

Action continues today before concluding Saturday.

Men

Burdick finished the 10K in a time of 30 minutes, 12.61 seconds to edge teammate Joel Reichow.

Reichow, a senior from White Bear Lake, Minn., crossed in 30:14.94 for his 15th career top-eight finish at the conference meet (six outdoors, nine indoors). He was also second in the 10,000 a year ago.

Reichow returns to action Saturday, competing in the 1,500 and then attempting to defend his title in the 5,000.

The Jackrabbits picked up 30 team points in the 10,000.

Trevor Capra placed third in 30:29.97. Chase Cayo (31:23.99), Brendan Sage (31:25.82) and Lukas Nelson (31:27.33) were sixth through eighth, respectively.

Colton Bender placed fourth in the hammer throw with a school-record mark of 199 feet, 8 inches.

Peter Bates was eighth in the javelin at 159-7.

Bates is in eighth out of eight competitors at the halfway point of the men’s decathlon with 3,057 points – 260 out of seventh. North Dakota State’s Angus Stoudt leads the way with 3,699 points.

The Bison top the team standings with 61 points and the Jackrabbits are second at 35.
