Catherine Amber “Cathy” Harrenga, 55, of Estelline, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2019, at the United Church of Christ, in Estelline. A prayer service will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church with visitation to follow until 5 p.m. Geise Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Catherine Amber McMacken was born on Sept. 21, 1964, in Ortonville, Minn., the daughter of William “Bill” and Lilly (Kruse) McMacken. She grew up in Ortonville, before her family moved to White, S.D., in 1973, and later Brookings, S.D. 

She graduated from Brookings High School in 1982. She worked at Country Kitchen for a number of years.  She met the love of her life, Howie Harrenga, in 1988, and the couple married on Nov. 25, 1989. She was a manager at Pangea until the couple moved to Estelline in 1998. 

Cathy worked at Ward’s Store for a short time before going to work at the Estelline Schools, where she worked as a cook for several years, and enjoyed spending her summers working at the Lake Poinsett Camp. In 2015, Cathy started cooking at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center, and loved being a part of the ENCC family.

Cathy loved her time spent camping. She enjoyed cooking and showing hospitality to her family and friends. She absolutely cherished her time with her grandson, Nathan.

She is survived by her husband, Howie Harrenga, of Estelline, S.D.; two sons, Josh Harrenga, of Brookings, S.D., and Jonathan Harrenga (Jill Jorgensen) of Fargo, N.D.; grandson, Nathan Harrenga, of Clear Lake, S.D.; mother, Lilly McMacken, of Brookings; her siblings, Scott (Lynette) McMacken, of Brookings, twin brother, Craig (Suzee) McMacken, of Brookings, Billy (Carley) McMacken, of Brookings, Kristi (Tim) Rusten, of Brandon, S.D., and Chris (Sam) McMacken, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, William McMacken, and her special puppy, Emmett.
