'Cats earn first win with 6-3 victory over Sioux Falls Roosevelt

SIOUX FALLS – The Bobcats beat Roosevelt 6-3 in a baseball game Monday evening for their first victory of the season.

Tyler Kreutner pitched five innings, allowing two runs – none earned – on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Daniel Messerli led off the game with a double and Kreutner was hit by a pitch with one away. Both runners advanced on a groundout, before Messerli scampered home on a wild pitch to open the scoring.

Jackson Krogman drew a base on balls and Cole Mahlum was hit by a pitch in the second. They moved up on Messerli’s sacrifice.

Justin Devine, who finished 2-for-3, came through with a two-run single on a hard groundball to right field, pushing the margin to 3-0.

The Rough Riders’ Connor Rysavy walked and later scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the second.

In the third, Karsten Grove singled with one away, moved to third on a botched pickoff attempt and then scored on Joey Ostermyer’s hit to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Brookings countered with two runs in the fifth.

Tanner Shepardson was hit by a pitch. Rhett Zelinsky quickly drove him in with a two-bagger and then advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Parker Rykhus followed with a walk.

Krogman’s sacrifice fly plated Zelinsky to make it 5-2.

Devine singled with one out and Jacob Schoon and Shepardson drew two-out free passes to load the bases in the sixth. Devine sprinted home on a wild pitch as the Bobcats moved ahead 6-2.

Messerli took over on the mound in the bottom of the sixth and quickly moved ahead of Jadan Bourne 0-2. However, Bourne ended up doubling on the eighth pitch of the at-bat before taking third on a groundout and scoring on Rysavy’s sacrifice fly.

With two outs in the seventh, Grove and Ostermyer drew walks to bring the tying run to the plate.

Krogman entered and got Bourne to ground out back to the mound to end it.

Grove took the loss, surrendering five runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts in four innings.
