Chapman seeks 4th term as register of deeds

BROOKINGS – Beverly Chapman has announced her intention to run for a fourth term as the Brookings County register of deeds, a position she’s held since 2007.

The Register of Deeds office keeps all the legal records concerning real estate in the county, and also preserves registration of marriage licenses, birth records, death records, burial records and military records for the county.

“We have all the real estate records back to Homesteading times, when we were the Dakota Territory. A lot of genealogists who are searching their family lines come in here and search the records because real estate records are open to the public,” she said. “That’s kind of fun to help them with that.”

Before running for the job of register of deeds, she worked in the office, starting in 1998 as a second deputy, and when the first deputy retired, she took over that role.

Register of deeds is a job she’s enjoyed having.

“I enjoy helping the people that come in. Everyone has their very own unique questions and problems, and I enjoy helping them and putting the puzzle together,” Chapman said, adding, “I like serving the public, and I enjoy the people I work with.”

Register of deeds has a four-year term.

If someone challenges Chapman and a primary race is necessary, it would be held on June 5. The general election takes place Nov. 6.
