VOLGA – The Cossacks dropped to 4-2 in the Lake Central Conference and 3-14 overall after losing a tough match to the Hamlin Chargers in five sets.
Each set was very close and Sioux Valley took the first set 25-23. The Chargers then took next two sets 27-25 and 25-23.
“I thought we played pretty well in the first set and then I thought we started to second guess what we were doing and lost some confidence. We dug a lot of balls and got a lot of kills out of some people we don’t normally see, so that was good to see,” Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent said.
After dropping two close sets, the Cossacks regained their confidence in the fourth set and won 25-19.
“Sometimes we get things rolling and have a lot of energy and sometimes we play better when we don’t really think,” Vincent said. “Then we overthink it and second guess and then we make a lot of mistakes in-a-row.”
In the fifth set, the Cossacks were down 13-10. They then scored four in-a-row to make it 14-3. The match was then tied at 15 when Hamlin scored two in-a-row to take the set and win the match.
Rylan Willis led Sioux Valley with 26 digs and 14 kills. Julia Steffensen had a team-high 27 digs. Miakken Vincent had 20 digs, seven kills and one block.
Ashtyn Abraham was the leader for the Chargers with 36 digs and 14 kills. Logan Keszler had 20 assists, 15 digs and 11 kills.
The Chargers came into the match 11-7 and 2-1 in the LCC. Vincent was happy with how her team performed against one of the top teams in the conference.
“Last year we never won a match in the LCC. This year I think we’ve done a really nice job of competing in the conference,” Vincent said.
The Cossacks will host Bereford Friday at 5 p.m.
