BROOKINGS – Yi Chen, a lecturer in saxophone, double reeds and jazz at South Dakota State University, will be presenting a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Founders Recital Hall at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.
The program will feature works by Pierre Max Dubois, Jacob TV, Greg Wanamaker, Andy Scott and William Grant Still. Chen will be joined by Xuan Kuang on piano and Michael Walsh on clarinet.
Chen has taught and performed throughout the United States and internationally with appearances in Japan, China, Belgium and Croatia. He has given master classes and recitals at the University of North Dakota, and Truman State University and California State University, Fullerton.
Chen performs at regional and national conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium and the Great Plains New Music Festival. He has been featured as a soloist with the Hong Kong Youth Saxophone Ensemble, the La Prima Vera Youth Symphony Orchestra and the University of Iowa Concert Band.
Chen received a bachelor’s of music in saxophone performance with an emphasis in jazz studies from California State University, Long Beach, a master’s in music education from the University of Southern California, and a doctoral degree in saxophone pedagogy and performance with secondary studies in jazz studies from the University of Iowa.
