Child kidnapped, later returned

BROOKINGS – A small child was reportedly taken without permission and later recovered, according to Brookings Police, and a Brookings woman is facing a kidnapping charge.

The report was filed just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

“A female reported that someone she knew had taken her 4-year-old daughter without permission,” Powers said. “It was someone who was known to the mother and the child.”

The mother believed the woman who took her daughter was heading to the Watertown area, so Brookings Police alerted law enforcement in the Watertown area and provided them with information on the woman and child.

“They located her shortly after 5:30 p.m.,” Powers said.

The woman was arrested by Watertown authorities and was “subsequently booked into the Brookings County Detention Center” on charges of kidnapping. She is a 51-year-old Brookings resident, Powers said.

The child was not harmed and was “returned to family,” he added.

He said he was not aware if alcohol or drugs was involved.
