Coffehouse tips help organization for orphans

BROOKINGS – The Mission of the Month for November at the Mission Coffeehouse at First Lutheran Church is St. Teresa Orphans Foundation (STOF), which is a nonprofit in Tanzania. 

STOF objectives are to love and care for orphans and vulnerable children by providing them with basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and medical care. 

Also, aid them mentally, spiritually and emotionally to give them hope for the future. To provide formula milk, medical care, clothing and shelter for infant orphans whose mothers die during labor, and abandoned babies. 

To provide training for new mothers and caretakers. To provide orphans with education opportunities so that they may have a bright future. To raise awareness among the people of Songea about the growing number of orphans and vulnerable children roaming in the streets and out of school. 

To educate, advocate and lobby for children’s rights and equal opportunity for all children regardless of color, gender, tribe, religion, physical and mental ability. Campaign for HIV/AID awareness and prevention throughout Songea community. Fight for malnutrition among orphans and vulnerable children under the age of seven by providing them with nutritional food. To fight child mortality rate by building children’s hospital and equipping it with modern equipment, doctors and nurses. 

From the Heart sale announced

BROOKINGS – The From the Heart Christmas and craft sale will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Mission Coffeehouse gym in First Lutheran Church at 337 Eighth St.

Mmm ... lutefisk

LAKE CAMPBELL – The Lake Campbell Lutheran Church will hold its annual lutefisk supper on Saturday, Nov. 9.

The church is located at 46610 219th St., Volga.

Serving times are at 4:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. The menu includes lutefisk, Swedish meatballs, lefse, flatbread, sweetsoup, holiday cookies and more. 

The cost is $18 for adults and $9 for children ages 6-12. Those 5 and younger eat for free. Reservations are required. To make a reservation, call Judy Jensen at 692-8781 or Charlotte Syrstad at 693-4325.  Lake Campbell Lutheran is a handicap accessible church.

Golden Age to hold meeting

BROOKINGS – Golden Age meets at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the First Lutheran Church chapel.

Keith Bartels will discuss his trip to Norway. Lunch will be served. Meet old friends and make new ones. 

No church affiliation is required.

Church celebrates 50 years

Brookings First Assembly of God Church will celebrate 50 years of ministry on Nov. 24. The church will begin the celebration at 9 a.m. with a “Walk Down Memory Lane,” where former pastoral staff and members will share memories of the ministry. At 10 a.m., the church will have its Celebration Worship Experience. The guest speaker for the day will be evangelist Roy Brewer. Following the message, the group will gather for a time of fellowship with a meal. Pastor Gerry Bassinvites the community to help celebrate.

Meals raising money for new kitchen

Thrivent Community, Hy-Vee and area churches are teaming up to raise money for the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter. Various churches will host a meal for a free-will donation throughout the day on Nov. 17. The times and meal options are:

 Breakfast from 9:15-10:45 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 337 Eighth St.

• Breakfast from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 629 Ninth Ave.

• Roast beef meal at 11:45 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 1104 22nd Ave.

• Various soups and salads from 4:45-6 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2030 Third St.

The goal is to raise $20,000 for a kitchen remodel project.
