WATERTOWN – After an opening-round upset of Renner on Tuesday in the Class A Junior Legion Region Tournament, the ‘Chutes lost two straight on Wednesday to be eliminated.

Brookings lost 13-1 to Watertown in the undefeated matchup before dropping an 11-3 decision to Renner in the elimination game.

The ‘Chutes got on the scoreboard with a run in the first inning when Daniel Messerli led off with a single; advanced to second on Cole Mahlum’s walk; moved to third on Jackson Krogman’s groundout to shortstop; and then scored on a wild pitch.

But that was the only run that Brookings plated as Watertown pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of four errors to scored 13 runs and end the game early via the run rule.

Krogman suffered the loss after giving up seven earned runs on seven hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings. Cayden Jacobsma allowed four runs – one earned – on four hits in 2/3 of an inning before Nick Schefers tossed the fourth and surrendered two runs – one earned – on a hit and a walk.

Post 307 sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate five runs for the early edge.

The ‘Chutes responded with two in the third as Messerli led off with a double and then scored on Krogman’s one-out single. Krogman stole second and scored on Honkomp’s base hit to make it 5-2.

Brookings got within 5-3 with another run in the fourth when Messerli was hit by a pitch; advanced to second when Krogman’s ground ball was misplayed; and then scored on Honkomp’s single to right.

But Renner answered with three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to put the game away.

Messerli suffered the loss after giving up five runs – one earned – on one hit and four walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Kyle Bauer gave up four earned runs on six hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings before Max Struck allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the sixth.
