'Chutes qualify for State Tournament

The 'Chutes won their region tournament with a 3-0 record over the weekend in Mitchell to advance to state. MITCHELL – The Brookings ‘Chutes, Brookings’ junior legion team, won their regional tournament over the weekend and qualified for the State Tournament. They beat Mitchell in the first game and beat Renner in the second game. They then beat Mitchell in championship.

 Brookings 8, Mitchell 6

Brookings scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead and staved off a Mitchell comeback in the bottom of the inning.

Mitchell got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Neither team scored in the second or third inning and Mitchell scored a run in the fourth inning to make it 3-0.

The ‘Chutes finally scored in the top of the fifth inning. Lincoln Hardin singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Justin Coffell fielder’s choice to make it 3-1. Brookings held Mitchell scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Brookings scored three runs top of the sixth to take the lead for the first time. Lincoln Hardin and Ashton Witte hit RBI singles. Trey Svennes scored on a Parker Winghart ground out to make it 4-3. Mitchell scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-4 heading into the final inning.

The ‘Chutes first two batters reached in the top of the seventh. Sam Hardin then hit a two-run double to make it 6-4. Sam Hardin scored on an error and Winghart hit an RBI double to make it 8-4. Mitchell scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners on with two outs, but grounded out to end the game.

Lincoln Hardin and Winghart each went 2-for-5 with two RBI’s. Sam Hardin went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and Witte went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jake Ammann picked up the win for Brookings. He pitched the first six innings and gave up four runs, one earned on six hits. He struck out three batters.

Saturday 

 Brookings 6, Renner 4

Brookings used a four run fourth inning to take the lead and didn’t look back.

Renner scored one run in each the first and second inning. Brookings got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Svennes singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.

The ‘Chutes held Renner scoreless in the top of the fourth and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Lincoln Hardin and Winghart each hit two-run single’s to make it 5-2. Brookings added one run on Payton Theodosopoulos RBI single to make it 6-2 after five innings. 

Renner scored two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 6-4, but that was as close as they would get. Lincoln Hardin went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s. Winghart went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s and Theodosopoulos went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Josh Devine was awarded the win after pitching five and two thirds innings. He gave up four runs, three earned on six hits. He struck out two batters and walked five.

Friday

 Brookings 5, Mitchell 1

The ‘Chutes jumped out to a 5-0 lead and that carried them to the win.

Neither team scored in the first two innings. Brookings struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Winghart and Witte each hit RBI singles. Sam Hardin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run to make it 3-0.

Brookings then scored two runs on a Theodosopoulos double which made it 5-0. Mitchell scored one run in the top of the fifth, but that was it.

Winghart and Witte each went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sam Hardin went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Lincoln Hardin picked up the win after pitching a complete game. He gave up one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts.

The ‘Chutes will play in the State Tournament which starts on Friday.
