Chutes split doubleheader

SIOUX FALLS – It was a tale of two games as the Chutes shutdown Sioux Falls West in game one and were shut down by Sioux Falls West in game two.

Game 1

 Brookings 7, Sioux Falls West 1

The Chutes gave up one run on just two hits as they rolled to victory in the first game.

Brookings scored two runs in the top first inning. Zach Struck hit Breck Hirrschoff and Nathan Lease home on a single to make it 2-0. Sioux Falls West responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1.

The Chutes scored a run in both in the second and third inning. Justin Cofell hit an RBI single in the third and Carter Wright scored on a bases loaded walk to make it 4-1.

Brookings extended its lead to 5-1 in the fifth. Owen Schneider hit Trent Pederson home with a single.

The Chutes picked up two insurance runs in the in the seventh to make it 7-1. Struck scored on a bases loaded walk and Hirrschoff hit an RBI single.

Lease pitched the first three innings. He gave up one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Nolan Miles pitched hitless innings with three strikeouts and a walk and Struck pitched the seventh and gave up no hits with three strikeouts.

Wright was 2-for-3 and Struck was 1-for-2. Lease and Pederson were each 1-for-3.

Game 2

 Sioux Falls West , Brookings 0

Game two was the opposite of game one as the Chutes only had four hits and scored two runs.

Cofell pitched the first three innings and gave up three runs, none, earned on two hits. Austin Clark pitched the next two innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits. Hirrschoff pitched the final inning and gave up three earned runs on four hits.

Lease was 1-for-4 with an RBI. The Chutes play in the Meide Meltdown Tournament this weekend in Minnetonka, Minn.
