'Chutes split with Sioux Falls West

BROOKINGS – The ‘Chutes scored five late runs to pull out a 15-11 win in Game 1 over Sioux Falls West on Wednesday at Bob Shelden Field, but couldn’t hold on to the magic as Post 15 cruised to an 11-2 win in the nightcap.

Brookings, 6-10 overall, plays host to Watertown on Monday in a doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m.

West built a 9-1 lead through 3 1/2 innings before the ‘Chutes got their offense on track.

Brookings plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth to get close; and then, scored three in the fifth to tie the game at 10-10 after Sioux Falls got a run in the top of the frame.

But the ‘Chutes put the game away with a five-run sixth to go up 15-10 as Max Kjelden’s two-RBI double highlighted the inning.

West scored a run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to four runs before Jackson Krogman took the mound to get the final three outs.

Brookings finished with 10 hits and took advantage of nine walks to put up the 15 runs.

Kjelden ended up with four RBIs as did Jamison Honkomp, who had a pair of hits. Krogman had two hits and two runs batted in while Daniel Messerli tallied two hits and an RBI.

Messerli recorded the win in relief, despite giving up nine runs – four earned – on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings of middle relief.

Nick Schefers tossed the first two innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

West scored once in the seventh and had a runner in scoring position before Krogman entered and faced just three hitters without allowing the runner to score.

The visitors scored a pair of runs in both the first and second innings to take control before tacking on six runs over the final two frames to earn the split.

Krogman had three of the ‘Chutes’ six hits as he suffered the loss on the mound after giving up four runs – two earned – on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in an inning.

Honkomp doubled twice and drove in a run while Kjelden had Brookings’ last hit.

Caden Wright tossed five innings of relief and allowed four runs – three earned – on three hits and four walks with five Ks.

Kyle Bauer threw the seventh and surrendered three unearned runs on a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
