'Chutes sweep two Yankton teams at home

BROOKINGS – The Brookings 'Chutes topped two Yankton teams Wednesday night. They beat the Yankton Blacksox 7-4 and Yankton Post 12 5-3 in Junior Legion action.

Brookings gave up just five hits and put together a three-run fourth inning which led to the win.

Yankton scored one run in the first inning and held the 'Chutes scoreless. Brookings then responded with two runs in the second.

Zach Struck and Breck Hirrschoff each scored on a Rocklyn Dauphinais ground out to make it 2-1.

Yankton tied the game in the top of the third. Owen Schneider led off the bottom of the inning with a triple for Brookings. Justin Coffell then hit him in to make it 3-2.

The Blacksox would tie the game once again in the top of the fourth, but Brookings responded once again. Nathan Lease hit an RBI single and Austin Clark scored on Struck fielder’s choice to make it 5-3. Brookings would tack on another run when Schneider scored on an error.

Yankton cut the lead to 6-4, but that was as close the Blacksox would get. Hirrschoff would score on an error in the sixth to make the final 7-4.

Clark got the start for Brookings. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits. Hirrschoff pitched the final 2 2/3 and gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Schneider went 2-for-3 and Hirrschoff went 1-for-1. Clark and Isaac Schulte each went 1-for-2. Struck went 1-for-3.

Brookings scored all of its runs in the fifth inning and got its second-straight win.

Yankton struck for two runs in the first inning. 

With the bases loaded in the top of the second, Andrew Bishop scored on an error. Clark then scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game.

Brookings took the lead when Schneider score on a wild pitch. Schulte then scored on a error and Struck scored on a bases loaded walk to make it 5-2.

The 'Chutes only allowed one run the rest of the way. Matt Nordmeyer pitched five innings for Brookings. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Nolan Miles pitched the final inning and shutout Yankton, only giving up one hit.

Coffell went 1-for-1. Clark and Schneider went 1-for-2. Struck and Hirrschoff each went 1-for-3.

The 'Chutes play in the Sioux Falls Invitational this weekend.
