'Chutes take 2nd at state

BRANDON – The 'Chutes placed second in the State Independent 16U Baseball Tournament at Aspen Park.

The host Lynx topped the 'Chutes 10-7 in the final Sunday.

Brookings opened with a 10-3 defeat of Sioux Falls East Friday. It fell 10-0 in five innings to Brandon Valley in the semifinals and then dropped Rapid City Post 22 in an elimination game to advance to the championship game.

The 'Chutes finished the season with a 22-11 record.

Sunday – Championship

 Brandon Valley 10, Brookings 7

The Lynx put up an eight-spot in the third frame to overcome an early 4-0 deficit en route to the championship.

Austin Reiter went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a pair of runs. Nick Hokenstad and Nate Meyers both had a hit and two RBIs. Luke Kocer doubled, singled and drove in one. Peyton Carroll had a run-scoring double.

Carroll allowed seven runs – none earned – on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Logan Kelling did not allow a hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, striking out two and walking one.

The 'Chutes’ Lincoln Hardin had a two-run double.

Sam Hardin and Trey Svennes both singled and drove in a run.

Payton Theodosopoulos and Talon Richter added RBIs, with Ashton Witte and Tyson Brandt contributing hits.

Svennes surrendered eight runs – only two earned – on six hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings. Brandt gave up two runs – one earned – on four hits with three Ks over the final 3 1/3.

Note: The 'Chutes would’ve needed to beat the Lynx twice to claim the title, as Brandon Valley was unbeaten entering the final.

 Brookings 10, Rapid City Post 22 2

Josh Devine and Tyson Brandt combined on a three-hitter and the 'Chutes offense provided plenty of support in the elimination game.

Devine allowed two runs on two hits and five walks with three punchouts in 5 2/3 innings. Brandt gave up one hit over the final 1 1/3.

Trey Svennes went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBIs.

Parker Winghart (triple) and Sam Hardin (double) both finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Payton Theodosopoulos singled and drove in a pair. Justin Cofell (double) and Ashton Witte added a hit and an RBI apiece. Devine singled.

Tayden Mitchell tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking one, in the winner’s bracket matchup.

Logan Kelling was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Austin Reiter also finished 2-for-3, doubling and driving in one. Sam Olthoff had a hit and two RBIs. Peyton Carroll doubled and singled. Jack Krohnke added two hits.

Brookings’ Justin Cofell and Trey Svennes both singled. Josh Devine walked and Lincoln Hardin was hit by a pitch.

Starter Jake Ammann took the loss after giving up nine runs on eight hits with three Ks and two BBs in 2 1/3. Ashton Witte allowed one run – unearned – on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 2 2/3.

Friday

The ‘Chutes scored nine times in the third inning to secure the opening victory.

Lincoln Hardin highlighted the big frame with a three-run double.

Trey Svennes singled and drove in a pair.

Talon Richter was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Parker Winghart and Sam Hardin contributed RBIs, while Ashton Witte and Payton Theodosopoulos chipped in with hits.

Lincoln Hardin worked 6 2/3 innings on the mound, giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Witte recorded the final out via strikeout after surrendering a walk.
