BROOKINGS – The City of Brookings has hired a new public information officer.

Sherry Fuller Bordewyk, a longtime Brookings resident, will start on Monday. Bordewyk has more than 35 years of communication experience in various industries, including newspaper, utility and higher education.

Bordewyk most recently served as director of career development at South Dakota State University. Prior to that, she was the director of marketing and foundation relations for the SDSU Foundation. She also taught journalism classes at SDSU and was the inaugural adviser to The Collegian, the SDSU student-run newspaper.

“I am honored and excited to be selected as the public information officer for the City of Brookings,” Bordewyk said. “I look forward to joining the team and serving the citizens of Brookings, a community my family and I have been proud and blessed to call home for 30 years.”

Throughout the search, the city received many qualified applicants from across the nation. The hiring committee focused on the city’s core, organization and community needs, according to City Manager Paul Briseno.

“We are very excited to welcome Sherry to the City of Brookings as the public information officer. The position is a critical link to ensuring the community knows all critical resources and services available from the City of Brookings. Sherry will be part of the leadership team that encourages all to bring their dreams,” Briseno said.

The first few months of Bordewyk’s employment will be focused on establishing relationships and acclimating to her role in the organization and community. Her contact information is forthcoming, and her office location will be in the City of Brookings’ administration building.
