BROOKINGS – The city has narrowed the search for chief of police to four finalists, Brookings City Manager Jeff Weldon announced Monday.

A total of 50 applicants from across the nation applied for the position, including one international applicant from Europe. The applicant pool was further narrowed to eight semifinalists, who underwent additional evaluation to narrow the pool to the following finalists:

Michael Burgeson, patrol and training lieutenant for the Yankton Police Department

David Erickson, assistant chief for the Brookings Police Department

Anthony Morgan, senior shift lieutenant for the Public Safety Department of Kalamazoo, Michigan

ν Brett Quilter, lieutenant executive officer of the Patrol Division for the Police Department of Boise, Idaho

The candidates will be in Brookings Dec. 4-5 for an extensive two-day interview process, which will include a series of four different interview panels, a community tour and presentation, testing evaluations, and meetings with the Brookings City Council and department heads.

The public is invited to attend an informal meet-and-greet reception with the finalist candidates from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at the Larson Nature Center, Dakota Nature Park, 1705 32nd St. S.

The selected candidate will then undergo a series of reference and background checks before the official hiring is complete. Weldon said he hoped to have a new police chief on duty by January or February 2018.
