Class B Amateur: Alexandria, Milbank advance

MITCHELL – Alexandria beat Tabor 10-3 and Milbank dropped Mount Vernon 6-5 in the second round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Monday night at Cadwell Park. 

The Angels and Firechiefs face off in a quarterfinal game Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Tonight, Menno and Garretson play at 5:30 p.m. and Clark takes on Northville at 7:30 p.m. in second-round games.

 Alexandria 10, Tabor 3

The Angels used a trio of three-run innings – highlighted by a John Greicar home run – and a strong pitching performance from Tyson Gau to defeat the Bluebirds.

Gau gave up one run on four hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked a pair while throwing 84 pitches.

Greicar blasted a three-run homer with two away in the third.

In the fourth, Pierce Smith reached on an error with one out and Reid Smith followed with a triple to make it 4-0.

Zach Sutera got Tabor on the board in the bottom of the fifth, drawing a leadoff walk, moving to second on a groundout, advancing to third on Bryce Scieszinski’s hit and scoring on Tanner VanDriel’s fielder’s choice.

Alexandria’s Pierce Smith, Reid Smith and Jarrod Zens singled with one out in the sixth.

Peyton Smith plated Pierce Smith with a sacrifice fly. Cole Wenande followed with an RBI single and Gau reached on an error, which allowed Zens to score to make it 7-1.

Jordan Gau walked to open the seventh and quickly scored on Chris Marek’s double. After Pierce Smith was hit by a pitch, Zens came through with a one-out RBI single. Peyton Smith was also beaned and Wenande hit into a fielder’s choice, which allowed Pierce Smith to score to push the margin to 10-1.

Tabor scored two runs in the ninth.

Marek, Reid Smith and Zens each had two hits for the Angels.

Jordan Gau pitched the final two frames, allowing two runs – none earned – on three hits and a walk.

The Bluebirds’ Cam Guevara went 2-for-5.

Colin Muth took the loss on the bump after surrendering seven runs – five earned – on nine hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts in six innings.

Brady Krause’s walkoff hit lifted the Firechiefs over the Mustangs.

Travis Lester was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-runner Jonny Ash advanced to second on Jacob Jackson’s sacrifice and Lance Frogner was intentionally walked.

Krause, who finished 2-for-5, singled sharply to left to plate Ash with a winning run.

Milbank out-hit Mount Vernon 15-5.

Firechiefs starter Dom Boerger gave up one run on only two hits in six innings. He struck out 11 and walked five while throwing 140 pitches.

Taylor Boerger picked up the win despite surrendering four runs – three earned – on three hits and three walks over the final three frames.

Jesse Krause, who went 3-for-5 at the plate, singled to open the bottom of the first. Cole Gross, a pick-up player from Volga, reached on an error.

Tristan Hall had an RBI single. Gross took third on an error and Hall stole second.

Lester’s sacrifice fly drove in Gross and Jackson followed with a run-scoring hit to put Milbank up 3-0.

Mount Vernon’s Chase Hetland had an RBI single in the third.

Frogner, who went 3-for-4, singled with one away in the sixth and Brady Krause got aboard via an error. Frogner scored on the error and Jesse Krause followed with an RBI single to put the Firechiefs ahead 5-1.

The Mustangs rallied after that versus Taylor Boerger.

In the seventh, Bradley Dean drew a one-out walk, made it to third on a groundout and scored on an error on Deric Denning’s batted ball to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Mount Vernon put up a three-spot in the top of the ninth.

Tate Deinert walked, Bradley Dean single and Briggs Havlik was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.

Hetland came through with a two-run hit – Havlik was thrown out at home on the play. With two away, Eric Giblin drove in a run with a single to knot things up a 5-all.

Hetland finished 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and three RBIs.

Dean took the loss after allowing one run on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Starter Luke Tiesley surrendered five runs – none earned – on 11 hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3.
