Class B Amateur: Canova and Dell Rapids advance

MITCHELL – Canova and Dell Rapids advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament Wednesday night in Mitchell. Canova topped the Flandreau Cardinals 3-1 and Mudcats beat Four Corners 16-6 in eight innings.

Canova scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie and win the game.

The Cardinals broke the tie in the bottom of the third. Tanner Harris led off the inning with a double. Cater Howell then reached on walk with one out. Luke Gassman, who was running for 

Harris, scored on a Jared Campbell fielder’s choice to make it 1-0.

Canova didn’t take long to answer. Jared Miller hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth and tie the game 1-1.

Neither team was able to get much going offensively, until Flandreau had a scoring threat in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Howell came to the plate with runners on first and third and struck out to end the inning.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Jared Miller hit Justin Miller home on a sacrifice fly to give Canova the lead. Garrett Gassman then followed with a solo home run to make it 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Bret Severtson led off the bottom of the inning with a ground out. Deion Entringer then flew out to left field and Harris struck out looking to end the game and the Cardinals season.

Trey Krier picked up the win for Canova. He pitched a complete game and gave up one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Jared Miller went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Gassman went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

 Dell Rapids 16, Four Corners 6 (8 inn.)

The Mudcats used six runs in the final three innings to win via the 10-run rule.

Four Corners scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, but Dell Rapids answered with six runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Grant Olson and Jared Donahue hit back-to-back RBI singles. Josh Roeman then hit a two RBI single and Chad Hunt hit a two RBI double make it 6-1.

Four Corner cut it to 6-5 in the fourth inning. Brian Graves hit a two RBI double and Brian Graves scored on an error.

Dell Rapids responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Travis Peters and Olson each hit RBI singles. Aaron Johnson and Olson then scored on an error to make it 10-5.

A two RBI double in the seventh inning from Mark Houck made it 14-5. Dell Rapids then just needed two runs in the eighth to win via the 10-run rule. They did just that as Elijah Story scored on an error and Nate Henry hit Hunt home on a single to win the game 16-6.

Andrew Wegner got the win for Dell Rapids. He pitched three innings and gave up no runs on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.

Houck went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Roemen went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Henry went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and Olson went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Dell Rapids will face Canova in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Mitchell.
