Class B Amateur: Winner/Colome, Wynot advance

MITCHELL – The Winner/Colome Pheasants and the Wynot (Neb.) Expos advanced in the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Caldwell Park in Mitchell Wednesday. Winner Colome defeated Lennox and Wynot defeated the Corisca/Stickney Horned Frogs. 

 Winner/Colome 3, Lennox 0

Winner/Colome jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and didn’t look back. Jeff Harris led off the inning with a single for the Pheasants. Reed Harter and Austin Calhoon followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases up. Harris was thrown out at home for the first out of the inning. Harter then scored on an error by the catcher.

Neither team scored again until the Pheasants added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Harter hit a double and was sent home on a Calhoon single to make it 2-0 after five innings. 

Winner/Colome picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Dillon Lambley hit a lead-off double. He later scored on a sacrifice bunt from Derek Graesser to make it 3-0.

Lennox was down to their final at-bats in the top of the ninth inning. Justin Underwood grounded out to second base to begin the inning. Ryan Pingrey then flew out to left field and Chad Morrison struck out swinging to end the game.

Connor Hopkins pitched a complete game for the Pheasants. He gave up four hits with 11 strikeouts and five walks.

Calhoon went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Harter went 1-for-3 and Harris went 1-for-4. Winner/Colome out-hit Lennox 5-4.

 Wynot (NE) 16, Corisca/Stickney 6 (8 inn.) 

The Expos scored the first couple runs of the game in the second inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Jackson Sudbeck scored on an error by the catcher. Dawson Sudbeck then grounded out to shortstop allowing Dave Schmidt to score and make it 2-0 after two innings.

The Horned Frogs responded with three runs in the top of the third inning. With no outs, Aaron Groeneweg hit an RBI single. Kris Menning followed with a single of his own and Groeneweg scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 3-2.

Wynot regained the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Schmidt hit a RBI single and Devon Lammers hit a two-RBI single to make 5-3 after three innings.

The Expos added one more run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-3, but the Horned Frogs were able to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning. Gavin Zomer hit a RBI double and Jared Dewaard scored on an error. Ryan Buck then hit a RBI single to make it 6-6.

The game was not tied for long, as the Expos scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Sudbeck and Chase Rolfes each hit RBI singles to make it 8-6.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wynot scored four more runs. Scott Morrison hit a two-RBI single and Sudbeck hit an RBI single. Morrison then scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-6.

The Expos then scored two runs in each the seventh and eighth inning to take a 10-run lead and win the game via the 10-run rule.

Jackson Sudbeck pitched a complete game for Wynot. He gave up six runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Morrison went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Dawson Sudbeck went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

Wynot will take on Winner/Colome Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
