Class B: Angels, Mudcats post second-round victories

MITCHELL – Defending-champion Alexandria drilled Parkston 13-1 and the Dell Rapids Mudcats beat Groton 14-0 in seven innings as second-round action got underway at the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday night at Cadwell Park.

The Angels and Mudcats face off in the quarterfinals Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Second-round action continues today with the Renner Bullets taking on Platte at 5:30 p.m. and Garretson facing Winner/Colome at 7:30 p.m.

Second round

• Alexandria 13, Parkston 1

Three Angels pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the perennial powers rolled into the quarterfinals for the seventh consecutive season.

Jed Schmidt one run – an unearned tally in the opening frame – on two hits with six strikeouts and four walks over seven frames. Jordan Gau (eighth) and Wyatt Kayser (ninth) had 1-2-3 innings.

Tyson Gau was 3-for-6 with a pair of RBIs. Cole Wenande, Jordan Gau and Jarrod Zens each doubled, singled and drove in a pair. Michael Schoettmer added two singles and two RBIs. Peyton Smith had a pair of hits and an RBI as he and Wenande both scored three times.

The Mudcats’ Jared Donahue allowed five runs – four earned – on five hits and two walks with one K in 3 1/3.

Mark Abrahamson tossed a one-hit gem and the Mudcats racked up 18 hits of their own. He struck out 11 and walked one.

Josh Roemen and Mark Houck both had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Trevor Freudenthal singled twice and drove in a pair. Abrahamson and battery mate Elijah Story both doubled, singled and drove in one. Grant Olson and Jimmy Bauer each singled and logged a pair of RBIs. Blake Svoboda (double) and Chad Hunt contributed two hits apiece.

Locke Electric starter Roniel Tejada allowed six runs – five earned – on six hits and two walks in two innings. Heath Giedt doubled.

First round

• Clark 11, Four Corners 5

Zach Toben fired a seven hitter, allowing five runs – two earned – with five strikeouts and four walks. He threw 163 pitches.

Lane Hovde led the Traders’ 15-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Toben (triple) and Rhett Florey (double, three runs) both went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Kyle Braun doubled twice and drove in a run. Tyler Brinka (RBI) and Jay Huber added two hits apiece.

The Traders scored five runs in the top of the fourth to grab an 8-3 lead.

Four Corners’ Justin Allen was 3-for-5 with a two-bagger.

JD Farley allowed eight runs – six earned – on 10 hits with three Ks and a BB in four frames of action.

Jackson Sudbeck tossed a seven-hit shutout, striking out four, as the Expos advanced.

Dylan Lehr singled to lead off the bottom of the second, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Scott Morrison’s hit. In the third, Lane Wieseler was hit by a pitch with one out and sprinted home on Lee Heimes’ double.

Heimes and Lehr both finished 2-for-4.

The Colt 45’s Tyler Candor was 2-for-3 and Steve Fejfar doubled. Derek Quame allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk in a complete game showing.

 Canova 8, Mount Vernon 3

The Gang used a trio of two-run innings to move ahead 6-0 at the end of six en route to the victory.

Jason Miller was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Justin Miller went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Kendall Gassman ended up 3-for-5. Cole Gassman stroked a pair of doubles while driving in a run. Garrett Gassman doubled, singled and drove in a run.

Trey Krier went the distance on the mound and gave up three runs – none of which were earned – on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

The Mustangs’ Chase Hetland was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Deric Denning gave up six runs on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts in six innings in the loss.

Bret Mogen spun a five-hitter, allowing just one run while striking out nine and walking three.

Weston Hansen drove in three runs – two of which came on a double. Carter Gullickson and Riley Hoffman both had two hits and scored twice.

The Firechiefs’ Tristan Hall went yard. Taylor Boerger gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 4 1/3 innings while taking the loss. Dom Boerger allowed one run – unearned – on two hits with eight Ks the rest of the way.

The Diamonds exploded for eight runs in the 10th to secure the victory after forcing extra innings with a run in the ninth.

Scott Erickson (two doubles) and Micah Lee both had a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Cody Groskreutz had two hits and an RBI and Jaden Snyder contributed a two-run triple.

Patrick Sinnema tossed the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out three, to earn the win.

The Nationals’ Zach Walner was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Starter Zach Walner allowed six runs – four earned – on five hits with 11 walks and 10 Ks in 9 1/3. He threw 183 pitches.

The Cubs posted the first shutout of the tourney as Tyler Earls fired a six-hit gem. He struck out five batters and issued a trio of free passes.

Isaac Anderson drove in a run in the fifth. Cole Cheeseman homered in the eighth and Brian Duxbury doubled and scored on Steve Mehlbrech’s hit later in the frame.

The Blue Jays’ Tyler Priest surrendered three runs on eight hits with six Ksand a walk in 7 2/3 innings.

The Bluejays racked up 20 hits in the run-rule shortened victory.

Nick Bruning was 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Jesse Brockhouse had three hits and a trio of RBIs, while Scott Splett (double) and Brady Bonte both contributed three hits and one RBI.

Nick Bonte doubled, singled and drove in four. Brad Ulmer added two hits and an RBI.

Jared Kirkeby tossed a complete game, giving up four runs – three earned – on six hits wth six strikeouts and a walk.

The Storm’s Jay Winter was 2-for-3. Blake Boes had a two-run double. Cody Cotton took the loss after allowing 10 runs – five earned – on 13 hits with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Jordan Gesling took the loss after giving up six runs – four earned – on four hits and three walks with a trio of Ks in 4 1/3 frames. Bret Severtson tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings, surrendering four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Devon Garry had four RBIs – three of which came on a homer during the Gamecocks’ seven-run second frame.

Broc Halerman (double) and Drew DeMers were both 3-for-4 with an RBI. Came Quigley ended up 2-for-2 with an RBI, drawing a pair of walks and scoring twice.

The Slough Sharks’ Trever Petersen took the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk in four innings

Kevin Krumm drove in a trio of runs. Sutton Masat doubled, single and drove in a pair, while Nate Binger went 2-for-4.

Krumm picked up the win in relief after giving up two runs on five hits with two Ks and a pair of BBs.

The Cardinals, who totaled 15 hits, got three hits apiece from Matt Sees (two RBIs) and Mason Oplinger (one RBI). Jacob Rausch was the losing pitcher as he allowed eight runs – three earned – on six hits and three walks with a strikeout in 1 2/3.
