VOLGA – Cole Gross tossed his second no-hitter of the season and Sioux Valley beat Deuel/Castlewood/Hamlin 10-0 in five innings on Friday evening at Hoff Field for its sixth consecutive victory.
The right-hander struck out six batters and walked one, as he faced one batter over the minimum. He retired the first 10 he faced.
Brayden Havrevold and Zack Puetz both finished 2-for-3. Puetz, Havrevold, Nick Strasburg and Daymein Lucas scored two runs apiece.
Puetz led off the bottom of the second with a double to right-center field and took advantage of a pair of wild pitches to score. Strasburg reached on an error and later scored to make it 2-0.
The Cossacks put together a two-out rally in the fourth as Havrevold singled and Daymein Lucas and Tyler Schwartz drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.
Havrevold and Lucas both sprinted home on passed balls to push the margin to 4-0.
Sioux Valley ended the game with six runs in the fifth.
Gross got it going with a double. Zach Puetz singled and Strasburg walked to load the bases.
Chase Ringheimer forced in Gross with a walk. Havrevold’s two-run single made it 7-0.
Lucas followed with a walk to again load the bases. Noah Puetz drew a one-out walk, plating Havrevold to give the Cossacks an 8-0 lead.
Matt Larson’s two-run single ended the game via the 10-run rule.
Sioux Valley (7-1) plays at Redfield Area on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
