Cole wins ESD Golf Tournament

Bobcats finish 2nd, a stroke off the pace

HURON – Drew Cole claimed medalist honors and the Bobcats just missed winning the team title in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Boys’ Golf Tournament on a windy Saturday at Broadland Creek.

Cole was the only player to break 80, carding a 3-over-par 75 for a five-stroke victory.

The senior made four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. He had nine-hole scores of 39 and 36.

“Drew has been a leader for us all year and his play has set the tone for everyone else,” said BHS coach Andy Lee. “Last year, there were glimpses of him shooting low. This year, he has worked extremely hard at his short game and it is paying off; those glimpses have turned into consistency and now, an ESD individual title.”

Yankton took the team crown with a 337 total.

Brookings was a shot back in second at 338.

“This was definitely a team performance today,” added Lee. “I am very proud of these six guys for toughing out the windy conditions and giving us a chance to win an ESD title.

“Even though we came up a stroke short, these guys proved they were a team and fought together.”

Huron (343), Harrisburg (344) and Watertown (345) rounded out the top five.

Harrisburg’s Will Allen defeated Yankton’s Gavin Haselhorst on the second hole of a playoff to place second after both golfers shot 80 in regulation.

Harrisburg’s Gavin Hatch and Aberdeen Central’s Ethan Vikander tied for fourth with 81s.

Yankton’s Michael Frick and Huron’s Landon Roberts shot 82 to tie sixth.

Watertown’s Jake Olson was eighth at 83.

Brookings’ Jesse Roberts carded an 84, as he finished in a tie for ninth with Huron’s Marty Boetel.

Rounding out the Bucks’ winning team score, Austin Frick (87) tied for 12th and Landon Moe (88) tied for 17th.

Completing the Bobcats’ team tally, Alec Rice shot 87 to earn a medal and finish in a tie for 12th, and Ryan Treiber shot 92 to take 36th.

“Not very often have we had three players medal in a full season and now we had three in one meet with Alec and Jesse rounding it out,” Lee said. “That’s the fun thing about this team, we have guys stepping up in different ways at different ages.

“I am excited to see how they handle this and if they can carry some momentum into the state tournament, because we have a chance to prove ourselves at an even high level after today.”

Also for Brookings, Jordan Svobodny (94) tied for 38th and Justin Kortan (99) tied for 44th.

The Bobcats close out the regular season with a triangular against Sioux Falls Washington and host Mitchell on Thursday at noon at Lakeview.
