AUSTIN, Texas - South Dakota State senior Matt Dentlinger completed a three-peat on Tuesday as he was named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America men’s basketball team as selected by the College Sports Communicators. Dentlinger was chosen to the NCAA Division I First Team for the first time in his college career.
The Arcadia, Iowa, native was one of six Division I men’s basketball student-athletes to earn First Team Academic All-America honors. Dentlinger is one of seven players listed to earn repeat Academic All-America Accolades.
Dentlinger was a Second Team All-Summit League performer on the court this season as he played and started in all 32 games for the Jackrabbits. He averaged 14.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in conference play while leading the league in 18 games in field goal percentage (62.4%). Dentlinger scored in double digits in 16 of the last 19 games of the season which included two of his career-best 26-point efforts. He became SDSU’s all-time games played leader with a total of 154 appearances in Yellow and Blue.
His First Team Academic All-America honors in 2022-23 follow his previous Second Team (2021-22) and Third Team (2020-21) selections. The SDSU forward has already earned his mechanical engineering degree and is completing a graduate degree in electrical engineering which he holds a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
Dentlinger is the South Dakota State men’s program’s first three-time Academic All-American and the sixth Jackrabbit to achieve the feat ever in the Athletic Department. He’s the SDSU men’s team’s third ever First Team selection and only second at the Division I level joining Brayden Carlson in 2014. Dentlinger also was honored prior to the team’s quarterfinal game at the conference tournament as the Men’s Scholar of the Championship.
