College track and field: Jackrabbit teams each take third at UND

GRAND FORKS, ND - The South Dakota State men’s and women’s track squads each placed third in the final team standings at the UND Open and Multi on Saturday in the Pollard Athletic Center.

Several new facility records and personal bests were set throughout the weekend like by Ryan Benson, who clocked a new PR of 8.47 in the 60-meter hurdles of the heptathlon, which is now also a new facility record at UND. He earned three additional new PRs on top of yesterday’s success in the pole vault (10-06.00), 1000-meter run (2:49.05) and total points (4737), which is now fourth in school history.

Additionally in men’s competition, Drew Olson won the 60-meter dash finals after tying his personal best time of 6.95 seconds.

Andrew Law finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdle finals with a time of 9.10 seconds while Jeremiah Donahoe took sixth in 9.67 seconds.

Thailman Hallman was the first Jackrabbit to finish in the 200-meter dash as he took sixth place with a new personal best time of 22.18 seconds. Olson finished 10th in 22.51 and Joey Anders was 26th in 23.32 for a PR.

Reggie Slaba led the way for SDSU in the 400-meter dash, taking fifth place in 49.44 seconds for a new personal best. Kudra Nzibariza was seventh in 49.90, Donahoe placed 11th in 51.02 and Joey Anders finished 15th with a 51.53.

Andrew Moeller took fourth place overall in the men’s 600-meter run as he ran a 1:21.71 for a new personal best.

In the 800-meter run, Tom Breuckman crossed the finish line as runner-up with a time of 1:52.92 as Carter Knaus followed just behind in third place with a personal-best 1:53.38. Eli Salisbury took fifth in 1:55.36 for a new PR and Tyler O’Neill claimed 18th in 2:07.77

Salisbury then finished as runner-up in the mile run with a personal best time of 4:12.38 while O’Neill took 12th place with a 4:37.60 for a PR.

Cody Larson won the 3000-meter run with a new personal best time of 8:38.50, which is now a new facility record at UND.

The SDSU men finished with 83 for third place while North Dakota State took first place with 188 points. Host North Dakota earned 100 points for second place to round out the top three.

On the women’s side, Cerington Jones made a name for herself as she won the 400-meter dash in 56.37 seconds for a new facility record. Lauren Van Dyke was just behind her in second place with a 56.42 for a new personal best that solidifies herself in sixth on the all-time list. Jenna Johnson (4th, 57.68), Hannah Whitbread (5th, 57.81), and Erika Kuntz (8th, 58.29) rounded out the Jackrabbits in the top 10.

Savannah Risseeuw won her heat in the 60-meter hurdle prelims and clocked an 8.89 in the finals for fourth place.

Cora Shull ran an 8.34 in the 60-meter dash prelims while Elaine Rice clocked a personal best 8.37 in the event.

Jones also led SDSU in the 200-meter dash, taking sixth place in 25.61 seconds. Van Dyke earned another PR with her eighth place finish in 25.82 seconds while Johnson finished ninth with a 26.06 for a new personal best as well.

Also finishing in the event was Emily Rystrom (11th, 26.37), Jessica Boekelheide (12th, 26.51), Kuntz (13th, 26.66), Whitbread (15th, 26.85), Rice (24th, 28.07, PR) and Paige Kuchel (27th, 28.18).

Tori Glazier won the women’s 800-meter run in 2:14.97 as Harley Fischer burst into the top three with her time of 2:19.03 for third. Laura Bogue ran a personal best time of 2:22.83 for seventh and Hannah Spoden took 11th in 2:26.32.

In the women’s mile, Emma Ecker was runner-up with her time of 5:03.74 for a PR while Nina Dawson took sixth in 5:17.89. Malorie Schmoll was seventh (5:21.14), Emma Gonzalez came 10th (5:24.14, PR) and Hannah Nelson finished 15th (5:34.15, PR).

SDSU finished back-to-back-to-back as Kadense Dooley took sixth in 10:48.19 for a PR, Abby Deutsch was seventh with a personal best 10:48.75 and Bridget Henne claimed eighth in 10:53.51.

Mildred Young took 13th in the weight throw with a distance of 47-09.25 while Marianne Robin finished 14th with a 47-02.25.

Faith Leiseth finished in the top three of the shot put with her throw of 45-11.75 for third place followed by Young in 11th place with a 40-03.50. True Thorne finished 14th with a throw of 39-02.50, Paige Haakenson took 16th with a 39-01.25 and Kaitlynn Bot threw a 36-02.25 for 24th.

Bogue, Jaide Geurts, Fischer and Glazier teamed up in the final event of the evening for SDSU to take first place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:10.73.

The SDSU women finished with 102 points while host North Dakota took first with 167 points. North Dakota State rounded out the top three teams with 160.5 points for second place.

SDSU will split up for a variety of meets next weekend at Nebraska, Iowa State and South Dakota on Feb. 3 and 4.
