College track and field: Jackrabbits' men first, women third at Jim Emmerich Invitational

BROOKINGS – The South Dakota State University men’s track and field team claimed the team title while the women placed third at the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invitational on Saturday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

The biggest headline in competition came during the final event of the meet where Thailan Hallman, Pierre Lear, Reggie Slaba and Reid Pierzinski teamed up to take first place in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:14.40, now the fastest time in school history.

Lear also found success during the 60-meter hurdle finals, where he ran an 8.01 for first place in the tightly raced event.

Manny Phoulom-Smith clocked a 6.85 in the prelims of the 60-meter dash, which is a new personal best and now the sixth fastest time on record, before running a 6.87 for fourth place in the event finals.

Pierzinski ran a 21.75 in the 200-meter dash, earning himself a new PR and the fifth fastest time on record, as Phoulom-Smith finished just behind in fourth with a 21.79 for a new PR and the sixth fastest time. Ty Kadlec (14th, 22.68) also earned a PR.

All five competitors in the 400-meter dash clocked new PRs, led by Hallman’s time of 48.55 seconds for third place and fifth on the all-time list. Slaba ran a 49.63 for ninth, Jeremiah Donahoe took 12th in 50.80 seconds, Joey Anders was 13th in 50.80 seconds and AJ Josephson took 18th in 51.99 seconds.

Daniel Burkhalter took fifth in the men’s 800-meter run in a time of 1:52.90 while Andrew Johnson claimed 13th in 1:55.68 for a new PR.

In the men’s mile, Burkhalter led the way with his third place finish in 4:05.62 while Ben Olson took seventh in 4:07.37. Carter Knaus (9th, 4:08.07), Johnson (42nd, 4:31.51) and Tyler O’Neil (52nd, 4:44.19) all clocked new personal bests.

SDSU found quite a bit of success in the 3000-meter run, taking three of the top five places. Joseph Minor-Williams took first in 8:15.47, Ben Olson was second in 8:16.10 and Max Selbach finished fifth in 8:18.91. Tom Breuckman (9th, 8:24.87) was next, Will Lohr (8:26.49, PR) took 13th, Kyle Nordling (8:26.71, PR) claimed 14th and Mason McDonald (8:40.06, PR) finished 25th.

Tre Manning earned runner-up in the men’s long jump with a leap of 23-00.00 while Tyler Goehring finished tied for 11th with a jump of 20-09.25.

Tristen Hanna placed in the top three of the triple jump as he claimed third place with a distance of 45-05.00 and Matthew Katz took fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 15-09.00.

In the men’s high jump, Conner Powers placed eighth with a clearance of 6-04.75. Jesse Cauble tied for 12th with a personal-best 6-01.00 while Ryan Benson took 14th with a height of 6-01.00.

Four throwers placed in the top 10 of the men’s weight throw, led by Hunter Wallster’s personal-best throw of 63-02.00 for third place, which is now sixth all-time. Dominick Etherington (60-03.25, PR, seventh all-time) placed fourth, Ethan Fischer (57-03.00, PR) was seventh and Calob Jones (55-10.50) claimed ninth.

Etherington then took third place in the shot put with a throw of 58-11.50 while Wyatt Seagren finished eighth with a 52-09.25 (PR) and Brogan Seier grabbed ninth with a throw of 51-07.25 (PR).

Out of 14 teams, South Dakota State finished the day with 123 points for first place while North Dakota State (118.5 points) took second place and South Dakota (106.5 points) was third.

In women’s competition, Jaiden Boomsma found success both on the track and in the pit. She took second place in the long jump with a leap of 19-02.75, which is a new PR and is now third on the all-time list, and took second in the 60-meter dash finals in 7.59 seconds.

Brielle Dixon and Ashtyn Bertram also competed in the 60-meter dash finals and finished in fifth (7.79 seconds) and sixth (7.82 seconds, PR), respectively.

Dixon scored a new PR in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking an 8.52 for fourth place, which is just .02 seconds shy of tying the school record. Savannah Risseeuw also made finals and ran an 8.81 for seventh place.

Bertram led SDSU in the 200-meter dash, taking seventh place in 25.73. Cora Shull (27.04, PR) finished 20th and Elaina Rice (28.35, PR) claimed 30th.

Five Jackrabbits placed in the top 11 while six athletes scored PRs in the women’s 400-meter dash. Lauren Van Dyke led the way in fourth place with a 56.54, now sixth on the all-time list, as Cerington Jones finished sixth in 57.00. Jenna Johnson earned a PR in 57.59 for seventh, Erika Kuntz took ninth in 58.05 for a personal best and Hannah Whitbread was 11th in 58.16.

Jessica Boekelheide (16th, 1:00.33), Abby Hughes (17th, 1:00.50) and Brielle Ruen (21st, 1:03.08) all also earned new personal bests.

Laura Bogue took fifth in the 600-meter run, clocking a 1:39.26 for fifth place and a new PR.

Grace Waage was runner-up in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 2:15.24 for a new personal best. Tori Glazier was third in 2:16.05 and Harley Fischer earned ninth in 2:17.03 for a new PR. Claire Beckman (2:17.41) was 11th, Jaide Guerts (2:18.72) claimed 13th and Hannah Spoden (2:24.44, PR) took 23rd.

In the 3000-meter run, Mya Kizer and Nicole Greyer finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh place with personal-best times of 10:00.01 and 10:00.23, respectively. Kayla Christopherson finished 11th in 10:18.03 for a PR, Caitlin Bright was 16th in 10:24.24. and Emma Ecker took 21st in a personal-best 10:37.14.

Bridget Henne (26th, 10:47.97), Emma Gonzalez (28th, 10:49.70, PR), Abby Deutsch (29th, 10:51.96, PR), Kadense Dooley (31st, 10:54.74, PR) and Malorie Schmoll (33rd, 10:59.26) round out the SDSU finishers in the event.

Emma Smith finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 35-05.75 (PR) and Annie Wendt took eighth with a 35-02.00.

In the high jump, Madison Kizer took third with a 5-07.00 while Layne Kirkendoll finished fifth with a personal-best 5-05.00 and Jordan Stoddard claimed sixth with a 5-05.00. Taylor Jochum earned sixth and a PR with a clearance of 5-03.00 while Hadley Carlson tied for seventh with a 5-01.00 and Claire Galvin finished eighth with a 5-01.00.

Greta Johnson tied for eighth in the pole vault with a clearance of 9-10.25 while Faith Leiseth was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 45-09.75.

Four SDSU squads competed in the women’s 4x400-meter relay, led by the team of Johnson, Jones, Van Dyke and Whitbread who took third overall in 3:47.72, which is now the third fastest time on record. The team of Kutz, Elizabeth Gillingham, Glazier and Rystrom finished fifth in 3:57.98 while Bogue, Geurts, Fischer and Waage teamed up for an eight place finish in 4:08.61. The final squad of Katelyn Darnell, Paige Kuchel, Nina Dawson and Spoden grabbed 10th place in 4:14.03.

SDSU took third out of 11 teams with 108.5 points as South Dakota finished with 224 points for first and North Dakota State grabbed second with 118 points.

Brookings also hosted the SDSU D2 Open on Friday, where five athletes competed through four events.

Emma Gonzalez took third overall in the women’s mile run with a personal-best time of 5:28.63 as Hannah Spoden finished sixth in her heat and ninth overall in the 600-meter run in a personal-best 1:44.69.

Nina Dawson was runner-up in the 800-meter run with a new personal-best time of 2:20.80 while Tyler O’Neil finished 15th in 2:02.77 in the 800-meter run for a new PR and Andrew Johnson took 34th in 2:18.32 for a PR.
