College volleyball: Denver sweeps Jackrabbits in Summit League Tournament
VERMILLION — South Dakota State’s volleyball season came to a close on Sunday afternoon as the Jackrabbits were swept by Denver in the first round of the Summit League Tournament.
The No. 6 seeded Jackrabbits hung around in the first two sets but then ran out of gas in the third and that led to the sweep by No. 3 seeded Denver. SDSU finished the season with an overall record of 9-20 and the Jacks were 7-9 in Summit League play.
Denver led 11-7 in the first set and the Jacks scored four straight to tie it up. The two teams then traded points before the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run to go up 21-16. SDSU would cut the lead to 21-19 but Denver scored four of the next five points and took the first set 25-20.
SDSU led 6-2 to start the second set. The Pioneers then went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. The two teams traded points once again until Denver scored four straight to go up 16-11. The Jacks would cut it to 16-14 but that was as close as they’d get and Denver took set two 25-21.
Denver jumped out to a 9-3 lead in set three. The Pioneers then led 11-5 and used a 7-1 run to go up 18-6. The Pioneers would extend the lead to 22-12 and eventually closed out the match with a 25-15 victory.
Denver had 42 kills and SDSU had 31 kills. The Pioneers had 50 digs and 35 assists. The Jacks had 46 digs and 29 assists. Denver had eight blocks and SDSU had five blocks.
The Jacks had an attack percentage of .133. Sylvie Zgonc had 11 kills and 10 digs to lead the Jacks. Rylee Martin had 14 assists and Raegen Reilly had 11 assists and 10 digs. Mesa Scheierman had nine digs and Sydni Schetnan had six kills.
Denver had an attack percentage of .262. The Pioneers were led by Casssie Davis who had 13 kills. Ava Reynolds had nine kills. Gianna Bartalo had 18 digs and Ryen Wilkins had 12 digs. Briley Decker had 28 assists and seven digs.
Denver will play No. 2 seeded Omaha on Monday at 4 p.m. No. 5 North Dakota State beat No. 4 South Dakota in five sets in the other first round matchup on Sunday. The Bison will play No. 1 Kansas City on Monday at 7 p.m.
