College volleyball: Jackrabbits fall in second round of NIVC

EDINBURGH, Texas – The South Dakota State volleyball team saw its season come to an end over the weekend as the Jackrabbits fell to UTRGV on Saturday in three sets in the second round of the NIVC (National Invitational Volleyball Championship).

This came one day after the Jacks beat Louisiana in five sets.

Saturday

• UTRGV 3, SDSU 0

South Dakota State volleyball dropped a three-set match to UTRGV Saturday afternoon in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (25-19, 25-20, 25-16). The Jackrabbits end the season 18-15 overall.

SDSU battled through all three sets with the Vaqueros but could not overcome a series of runs by the home team.

Masa Scheierman posted 12 kills for the Jackrabbits in the final game of her freshman season. She also had six digs and a service ace. Crystal Burk was just behind with 11 kills to go with seen digs and a solo block.

Freshman Alia Schlimgen got her first start at libero for the Jacks and tallied 13 digs and two ace serves. Raegen Reilly gave out 26 assists and recorded four digs.

UTRGV outhit SDSU .327 to .148 in the contest and had a 45-35 advantage in kills. The Vaqueros also had the advantage in aces (7-3), blocks (11-4), assists (43-32) and digs (45-37).

Friday

• SDSU 3, Louisiana 2

South Dakota State came out on top of a five-set battle with Louisiana Friday in the opening round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

Down 2-1 in the match, the Jackrabbits rallied to win sets four and five and pick up the program’s first national postseason victory in the Division I era. Set scores against the Ragin’ Cajuns went 25-19, 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 16-14.

South Dakota State (18-14) was led by outside hitters Crystal Burk and Masa Scheierman, who both had outstanding nights for the Jacks. Burk put down 25 kills, two shy of her career high, and tallied 12 digs and three blocks. Scheierman recorded 18 kills, her career best, to go with nine digs and two ace serves.

Middles Sydney Andrews and Ella Thompson contributed nine and seven kills, respectively, while Elyse Winter added six and Raegen Reilly had two. Reilly also gave out 53 assists.

Five Jackrabbits notched double-digit dig totals. Reilly and Jadyn Makovicka had 16 digs apiece , followed by Burk and Alia Schlimgen with 12 each and Katie Van Egdom with 10 digs. Burk also took part in three blocks (one solo, two assists).
