College wrestling: Reid Pierzinski, Pierre Lear break records at Colorado Invite

BOULDER, COLO - Reid Pierzinski and Pierre Lear put on a show for the South Dakota State University men’s track and field team as they each broke or tied a school record in their events at the Colorado Invite on Friday.

Pierzinski clocked a major personal best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.09 seconds for second place in the event and the fastest time in school history. His mark breaks the record of 47.29 set in 1985 by Jeff Tiefenthaler, which was the longest standing track record in the books for events regularly contested.

Lear ran a 7.89 in both the 60-meter hurdle prelims and finals, which tied his personal best and own school record. His time also gave him a first place finish in the event finals.

Competition was also under way for day one of the UND Open in Grand Forks, North Dakota. At the conclusion of the pentathlon, Katelyn Darnell led the way for SDSU with 3189 points for a sixth place finish. Robyn Dayton was eighth with 2803 points for a new PR and Elizabeth Gillingham took ninth with 2698 points.

In the individual events of the pentathlon, Darnell earned a PR in the long jump with a leap of 16-11.50 while Dayton clocked a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles with a 10.21. Gillingham also earned personal bests in the shot put (36-05.50) and 800-meter run (2:25.31).

Four men’s heptathlon events kicked off today and Ryan Benson currently sits in second place with 2688 points. He scored a PR in the high jump (6-02.25) and the shot put (33-11.25).

Faith Leiseth represented SDSU in the women’s discus where she placed second overall with her throw of 150- 07.00.
