Colman-Egan takes Region 2B crown

DE SMET – Colman-Egan claimed the girls’ team title at the Region 2B Cross Country Meet on Wednesday.

Dell Rapids St. Mary prevailed on the boys’ side.

The top three teams and top 20 individuals in both races qualified for the Class B State Cross Country Meet, to be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at Broadland Creek in Huron. The boys’ race is at 1 p.m. and the girls’ race is at 2:30 p.m.

Girls

The Hawks put three runners in the top nine and totaled 16 team points.

Howard (28) was second and De Smet (28) third.

Arlington (47) ended up sixth, Lake Preston (59) seventh and Elkton-Lake Benton (87) ninth.

Gayville-Volin’s Madison Fairley placed first in the 5K race in 18:48.87. The Tigers’ Emma Neisen (21:05.16) and Centerville’s Lillie Eide took second and third, respectively.

Reese Luze paced the Hawks, taking fourth with a 21:36.68 clocking.

Abby Rhode placed sixth in 21:39.32 and Presley Luze was ninth with a time of 22:05.82 to round out the team tally.

Lake Preston’s Ashlyn DeKnikker crossed in seventh with a 21:55.87 clocking.

Arlington’s Jada Henriksen (22:09.45) and Victoria Donovan (22:12.03) were 14th and 17th, respectively, while the Lady Elks’ Malayna Hemmen (22:23.97) ended up 20th as all three advanced to state.

Boys

The champion Cardinals put all five of their runners in the top 16 – led by medalist Jacob Vogel – while totaling 16 team points.

Canistota (20) was second and Elkton-Lake Benton (31) third to also advance to state.

Lake Preston (51) finished sixth.

Vogel completed the 5K trek in 17:20, edging Rhett McMasters. The Diver senior was runner-up with a 17:26.9 clocking.

Canistota’s Josiah Schroeder (17:45.6), De Smet’s Baylor Beck (17:59.97) and DRSM’s Connor Libis (18:52.66) were third through fifth, respectively.

The Elks’ Riley Hunter crossed in sixth in 18:53.29.

Teammate Miles Harming finished seventh with a time of 19:03.19. Cameron Lorden (19:49.72) took 19th to round out the team tally.

The Cardinals’ third runner – Seth Roemen (19:19.44) – placed 10th.

Lake Preston’s Ashton Wienk advanced after taking 17th in 19:46.82.

Colman-Egan’s Ben Zwart was the final qualifier in the field of 48, taking 20th with a time of 20:00.23.
