Colman residents getting Looney

COLMAN – The crazy fun starts tonight in Colman for the community’s annual Looney Days celebration.

A free movie at the Rescue Church starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight with popcorn and pop/water provided. Everyone is welcome to bring blankets and pillows.

“It’s a community-based event where a lot of the activities are free,” Looney Days Committee member Emily Voelker said. “There’s really no financial burden for people to bring their kids out for a day filled with fun.”

Friday will start off with a three-man scramble at the Sunrise Ridge Golf Course. For more information on the golf scramble, call 605-534-3121.

At the community center from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday is a dessert bake off. The theme is Disney, and desserts are to be dropped off in between the time listed. First place receives a prize of $50, and second place wins $25. Ending Friday night is the band Quick Sliver performing at Greg’s Place at 9 p.m.

“We’ve had a few people excited for the dessert bake off,” Voelker said. “People are excited to come up with some interesting and fun activities.”

Registration for a 5K run starts at 7 a.m. Saturday in front of the community center, with an 8 a.m. start. For more information, call Kari Schmidt at 605-530-0984. Also beginning at 8 a.m. is the community center activities that include vendor fair until noon, auxiliary bake sale and a library used book sale.

The Main Street parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, with line-up starting at 9 a.m. at the north end of Main Street.

After the parade there is a Colman Volunteer Fire Department pork loin feed at the fire hall at 11 a.m. along with children’s carnival games and inflatables in the open grass area south of the post office. The Lutheran Church also is serving walking tacos.

Voelker said that the parade is one of the most well-attended events on the weekend. She also noted that the pork loin served by the fire department usually sells out.

Free swimming and treats will be available at the pool Saturday afternoon. Water ballon toss and pop drinking contest are a part of the street games going on at 1 p.m. Beanbag tournaments are at both Sunrise Ridge Clubhouse and Greg’s Place. Registration starts at noon with tournaments beginning at 1 p.m. There is a raffle drawing at 2 p.m., and participants need not be present in order to win.

Karaoke also starts at 1 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m. under the tent in the parking lot at Greg’s Place. Kiddie tractor pull registration starts at 2 p.m. with sign-up on Main Street across from Greg’s Place.
