BROOKINGS – Deputy Mayor Keith Corbett has announced his intention to run for mayor of Brookings.

The municipal election is April 11.

Corbett has served on the Brookings City Council since May 2010 and has served as deputy mayor for the past five years.

He said his leadership and experience on the council plus serving on the Brookings Municipal Utilities Board and the Brookings Health System Board of Trustees provide him with an understanding of the needs and resources of a growing community.

Corbett also serves as chair of the Joint Powers Board, which works with the county on the administration and operation of the Brookings City & County Government Center.

He says his time serving on the council and boards and serving as chair of the Transportation Steering Committee and the Master Comprehensive Planning Committee have given him the background and tools he needs to work on issues facing the city.

Corbett said he’s committed to promoting economic development and responsible investment of taxpayer dollars. That can happen, Corbett says, with strong retail recruitment while supporting local home-grown businesses.

“We need to continue smart and balanced growth for the city, informed decision-making and creating additional economic diversity as a priority. We can accomplish that by capturing existing industry growth, building the next-generation economy with new business formation,” Corbett said.

“As we move forward, it’s also crucial that we promote responsible investment of tax dollars. We have several major projects facing our community, and I will continue to work with the council to analyze each issue and prioritize ours spending based on what will have the greatest return. One that will truly make tomorrow great for our city, businesses and families.”
