Corbett seeking another term as mayor

Posted

BROOKINGS – Brookings Mayor Keith Corbett has announced his intention to run for re-election for mayor.

The city council-school board election is April 10, and nominating petitions may start circulating Friday.

Opening on the Brookings City Council are the mayor post, with a three-year term, and three council seats, two with three-year terms now held by Patty Bacon and Nick Wendell and a one-year post currently held by Holly Tilton Byrne.

Two three-year positions, now held by Steve Bayer and Randy Grimsley, are opening on the Brookings School Board.

Corbett, who has served on the Brookings City Council since being elected in May 2010, has served as mayor for the past year and as deputy mayor for the five years preceding that.

Corbett said he wants to continue leading the city forward with initiatives already begun and opportunities for the future.

“The Affordable Housing report needs to be implemented, as well as implementing the Comprehensive Master Plan 2040, which will be rolled out this spring,” Corbett said in a press release.

“Workforce development is at the top of opportunities which must continue to be addressed and resolved, along with economic diversity.”

The new Brookings Marketplace will support strong retail recruitment while enhancing local home-grown businesses, Corbett added.

“Sales tax from businesses continues to be strong but bears close scrutiny to ensure the city provides a good quality of life.”

Attention to healthy, but not excessive, reserves are a priority for Corbett.

City, county, South Dakota State University and school board collaborative strategic planning has been an emphasis for Corbett, as well as planning with other Brookings County mayors.

Nominating petitions and candidate packets are now available at the City Clerk’s Office for the mayoral and council elections.

The deadline to file a petition is 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at the City Clerk’s Office, Brookings City & County Government Center, 520 Third St., Suite 230. For more information, contact Brookings City Clerk Shari Thornes at 692-6281 or sthornes@cityofbrookings.org.
