Cossacks beat Fliers 82-55 in BEC Tournament final


PARKER – Trevor Hanson had a double-double by halftime and Sioux Valley capped a dominant three-game stretch with an 82-55 defeat of Flandreau in the Big East Conference Boys’ Basketball Tournament final on Saturday evening.

The senior post finished with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including a 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range, and grabbed 16 rebounds. He added four blocked shots and four assists.

The Cossacks came out strong, moving ahead 23-11 after a quarter and pushing the advantage to 50-27 at the break.

Trevor Olson also hit four 3s while adding 22 points.

Ryan Schuster contributed 11 markers.

Jake Schneider totaled six points, seven boards and seven assists. Max Nielson dished out eight dimes.

Trent Hiltunen paced the reserves with five points.

The Cossacks shot 53.3 percent (32-of-60) and hit 10 treys while turning the ball over only six times.

Flandreau’s Connor LeBrun finished with 19 points. Dylan LeBrun, one of the top scorers in the state, ended up with 15.

Sioux Valley outscored its three opponents in the tourney a combined 225-129.

The Cossacks have won the BEC Tournament seven times in the past 10 years, including five of the past six and three consecutively.

Sioux Valley (9-1) hits the road to face Hamlin on Tuesday. Flandreau (6-2) plays at Madison on Friday.

Parker beat Baltic 73-48 in the third-place game, McCook Central/Montrose topped Howard in the fifth-place game and Garretson picked up its first win of the season by dropping Chester Area 45-37 in the seventh-place game.
