Cossacks cruise into Sweet 16

VOLGA – Trevor Olson got the offense going and the rest of the Cossacks followed suit.

Sioux Valley buried a school-record 19 3-pointers during a 97-43 shellacking of Redfield/ Doland on Thursday night to advance to the Class A Sweet 16.

Olson scored 22 of his game-high 26 points in the opening half as the Cossacks built a 44-22 advantage. The junior outscored the entire Pheasants lineup on his own for a majority of the first half.

“He just got it going and the guy scores in bunches,” said Sioux Valley coach Bill Vincent. “And all of a sudden, boom, he throws up 22 points before you knew what had happened. When that’s happening, then other guys get going. We got a lot of looks.

“They had to guard inside with (Trevor) Hanson and we knew we were going at him early. People got open looks; and good ball movement.”

The Cossacks exploded for 34 points in the third quarter to take a commanding 78-29 lead. They hit eight treys in the period.

Hanson put in 17 of his 23 points after the break, including 10 in the third quarter. He went 10-for-10 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.

Tayt Vincent finished with 14 points, while Max Nielson and Zack Puetz contributed eight apiece. Vincent and Nielson dished out four assists apiece.

All 15 Cossacks in uniform saw the court.

Nick Strasburg buried a pair of 3-pointers and Ryan Schuster added four points. Tyge Schiller knocked down a deep trey to beat the third-quarter buzzer and Cole Gross also connected from deep. Daymein Lucas had the team’s other bucket.

Olson scored 14 points in the opening stanza as the Cossacks were up 23-8 after 8 minutes.

The home team showed few signs of rust despite not playing a game for nearly two weeks.

“The thing that maybe hurt us a little in the first half was I got some different combinations on the floor, just got caught up in the postseason excitement as well,” added Vincent, whose team’s regular-season finale was Feb. 17. “But yeah, I thought we came out and played well. The ball was a little sticky, maybe a few too many first-half turnovers and not enough assists maybe in the first half.”

For the Pheasants (8-14), Micaiah Uttecht finished with 10 points. He was fouled on a layup attempt as time expired to end the second quarter, making both free throws to help the visitors match Olson’s first-half point total – 22.

Top-seeded Sioux Valley (19-2) faces 16thth-seeded Dakota Valley (11-10) in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday. The site of the game is still to be determined.

Clark/Willow Lake (19-2) beat Hamlin (11-11) 68-63 in the other Region 2A semifinal. Jacob Prouty scored 20 points in the win. Ntai Stevens, who had 10 boards, and Micah Burke added 17 points apiece and Bradyn Rusher contributed 14.

The Chargers’ John Roe posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Danny Strande chipped in with 20 points and Bryce Williams 13.

The No. 4 Cyclones take on No. 13 Tri-Valley in the Sweet 16.
