Cossacks crush Fighting Cougars

SALEM – To say the Cossacks cruised to their 11th win of the season in Friday night’s 83-29 Big East Conference win over McCook Central/Montrose would be somewhat of an understatement.

Sioux Valley built a 23-6 lead after a quarter; pushed its advantage to 43-17 at halftime; and then, increased the lead to 62-21 through three to improve to 11-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.

Trevor Olson scored a game-high 29 points while Trevor Hanson added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Cossacks. Jake Schneider posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Sioux Valley also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Fighting Cougars, 47-22.

Koltan Lindstrom tallied 11 points for MCM, which dropped to 4-6 and 2-3 in the BEC.

The Cossacks play host to Chester Area on Tuesday while the Fighting Cougars play host to Flandreau on Friday in Montrose.

• Pierre 58, Brookings 45

PIERRE – Pierre beat Brookings 58-45 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference boys’ basketball game Friday night.

No statistics were available.

The Bobcats (2-5, 2-5) play host to Sioux Falls Washington in a nonconference game Thursday at 7 p.m. The Governors improved to 2-7 (2-4).

• Arlington 69, Deubrook Area 59

WHITE – The Cardinals out-scored the Dolphins 43-24 in the second half, including 23-12 in the fourth quarter, to pull out the Dakota Valley Conference victory.

Deubrook was up 17-11 after a quarter and 35-26 at halftime. Arlington pulled within 47-46 through three.

The Cardinals’ Scott Sampson scored 18 points, and Devon Heuer and Will Parry added 15 apiece.

The Dolphins’ Jack Bandemer scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Cody Bauman posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 assists.

The DVC Tournament gets underway Monday as Arlington (5-3, 5-1) takes on Estelline and Deubrook (4-4, 2-2) faces Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in Estelline.

• Colman-Egan 53, Estelline 25

ESTELLINE – The Hawks opened up a 32-4 lead after 8 minutes en route to the DVC victory.

Dalton Voelker led the way with 15 points and Bodee Groos added 12.

The Redmen’s Spencer Lutz finished with nine markers.

The DVC tourney begins Monday with Colman-Egan (4-4, 4-1) facing Elkton-Lake Benton in Lake Preston and Estelline (0-9, 0-5) taking on Arlington at home.

• Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 67, Waverly-South Shore 49

RUTLAND – The Raiders, who led 31-28 at halftime, used a strong second half to pull away from Waverly-South Shore to post an 18-point nonconference win on Friday night.

ORR knocked down 48 percent of its shots from the field – 26-of-54 – and outscored the Coyotes, 18-4, on second-chance points to improve to 4-4 on the season with the eight-point win.

Jamus Brown led four Raiders in double-figure scoring with 16 points while dishing out eight assists. Jeremiah Hoekman added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Hunter Breske chipped in with 13 points and four assists. Justin Casanova scored 11 points.

The Raiders take on Deubrook Area in the first round of the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament in Estelline on Monday.

• Dell Rapids St. Mary 77, Lake Preston 51

LAKE PRESTON – The Cardinals exploded for 47 second-half points en route to a 77-51 Dakota Valley Conference victory over Lake Preston.

Tied 30-30 at halftime, the Cardinals put together a 24-10 third-quarter surge to take control, and then, DRSM pulled away with a 23-11 fourth-quarter run to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the DVC.

Connor Libis led St. Mary with 23 points and three assists while Max Herber added 20 points and eight rebounds. Luke Brown chipped in with 17 markers and six boards as Connar Kangas contributed seven points and three steals.

Paydon Casper’s 14 points led the Divers, who dropped to 2-7 and 1-4 in the conference. Byron Bumann finished with 10 points, six steals and six assists while Tate Larsen tallied seven points and four steals as Carter Malone came up with six points and five boards.

The two teams square off on Monday in the first round of the DVC Tournament in Lake Preston.

GIRLS

• Flandreau 76, Madison 52

FLANDREAU – The Fliers dropped Madison 76-52 in a nonconference girls’ basketball game Friday.

Kathy Parsley led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Hannah Parsley notched a double-double of 17 points and 11 boards. Mara Lunday scored 19 points.

Flandreau raced out to a 20-7 lead after a quarter. The Fliers were up 25-22 at halftime and 47-37 through three.

The Lady Bulldogs’ Maddie Gerry had 15 points and Nicole Brown 13.

Both teams compete in the Hanson Classic today at the Corn Palace in Mitchell as Flandreau (7-2) faces Belle Fourche and Madison (3-6) takes on Ethan.
