Cossacks drop Raiders for second win in a row

Sean Welsh/Register: Sioux Valley’s Abbie Schneider (33) converts a layup during the first quarter of the Cossacks’ 58-21 win over Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Monday in Volga. The sophomore scored 12 points in her season debut.

VOLGA – The Sioux Valley girls’ basketball squad opened 2019 like it concluded 2018 – with a win.

The Cossacks defeated Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 58-21 on Monday night.

The home team led 26-5 after a quarter. The score was 34-9 at halftime and 47-18 at the end of three.

“We had a couple of weeks off; we’ve been at practice and we’re in our third system of play,” said Sioux Valley coach Jamie Granum. “We have injuries – Rylan Willis had her shoulder repaired a couple days ago and Miakken Vincent is going to get her ACL (Tuesday).

“We’re young, we’re still learning; and I’m learning, too, on the bench. We’re teaching all the time and just trying to improve. We have a really, really tough one (Tuesday) with Hamlin in here – they have juniors and seniors and kids that have played a lot.

“Tonight, for me, was just getting back into the gym. One of our things on the board about tonight was ‘let’s win’ and then our second thing was ‘let’s leave no doubt.’

“I thought the kids came out and played hard. We’re not a great perimeter shooting team but we can rebound the basketball and that will be tested (Tuesday) night. I’m proud of our kids.”

The Cossacks’ advantage reached 30 points early in the fourth.

Perri Liedtke scored a game-high 15 points and came up with four steals.

Abbie Schneider returned from an injury, scoring 12 points in 16 minutes off the bench in her season debut.

Julia Schneider added nine points, and Ellie Schmidt and Reagan Johnson both had six points.

The Raiders’ Khloe Tieman finished with nine markers.

Sioux Valley (3-4), which beat Wester Area 54-37 in the Swiftel Center Classic on Dec. 22 in its last game, plays host to Hamlin tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the front end of a doubleheader.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland (0-8) is host to Elkton-Lake Benton on Thursday in Rutland.
