Cossacks go 0-4 on opening weekend of high school baseball

NORTHVILLE – It was a rough opening weekend for the Cossacks as they posted a 0-4 record against three teams at Northville.

Sioux Valley fell 8-2 to Howard in Saturday’s opener and then dropped a 4-3 decision against the Tigers on Sunday in a game that went eight innings. The Cossacks lost 9-5 to Redfield/Doland/Northwestern in Saturday’s late game and then were shut out as Dell Rapids/Dell Rapids St. Mary scored all its runs over the final four innings in Sunday’s late game.

The Cossacks play host to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday in a 5:30 p.m. game at Hoff Field.

Saturday’s Games

• Howard 8, Sioux Valley 2

The Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a walk, an error and two base hits to set the tone early and when Sioux Valley closed to within a run at 3-2; Howard added five more in the fifth for the final margin.

Chase Ringheimer walked to lead off the top of the third; stole second; advanced to third on a Howard error and then scored on Lane VanderWal’s fielder’s choice to cut the margin to 3-1.

In the fourth, Jackson Kooima led off with a base hit, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and then scored on Parker Puetz’ groundball out to make it 3-2.

But the Tigers batted around in the fifth, coming up with five runs on two hits and a pair of walks sandwiched around a three-base error for an 8-2 advantage through five complete.

Kashas VanderWal suffered the loss as he surrendered three runs – one earned – with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings of work.

Caleb Elijah gave up one earned run on one hit while Dylan Milton tossed two innings of relief and allowed four unearned runs on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

RDN built a 2-0 lead through 2 1/2 innings of play and then used a five-run fourth inning to take control.

The Cossacks got a run back in the bottom of the third when Daymein Danzeisen walked and then scored on Ringheimer’s double.

RDN went up 9-1 with two runs in the top of the sixth, and although Sioux Valley responded with four in the bottom, it wasn’t enough as the Cossacks dropped their second straight game.

Kooima hit a one-out single and moved to second when Trey Sholes walked. Puetz, VanderWal and Ringheimer followed with three straight hits before Christopherson was hit by a pitch, forcing in the final run.

Lane VanderWal was charged with seven earned runs in the loss over 3 1/3 innings on three hits and three walks as he struck out five.

Both of the runs that Elijah gave up over 2 2/3 innings were unearned as he struck out three and gave up four hits and a base on balls. Bultje threw the final inning and struck out one and walked two.

The Cossacks took advantage of four walks to plate a run in the bottom of the first inning before Howard took the lead with a two-run fourth.

After Sioux Valley put up single runs in both the fourth and the fifth for a 3-2 lead, the Tigers rallied to tie the game with a run in the sixth and then pushed across one in the eighth to pull out the win.

In the fourth, Bultje led off with a single and went to second on a fielding error before advancing to third and home on passed balls to tie the game at 2-2 through four.

Ringheimer walked to open the fifth, stole second and scored on Christopherson’s RBI single for the short-lived lead.

Kooima was saddled with the loss after giving up two earned runs over three innings of relief. He allowed three hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Puetz went the first five, striking out 11 and walking two as both runs he allowed were unearned.

Eddie Price struck out 19 Cossacks while walking one as he went the distance to earn the shut out win for Dell Rapids.

Ringheimer allowed four earned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts over four innings.

Conner Logan gave up six runs – three earned – over the final three frames on two hits and five walks with a strikeout.
